Excerpt from Army Life: A Private's Reminiscences of the Civil War Many volumes have been published in regard to the late Civil War in America. By these the nation is made familiar with the movements of our armies, and the results of those great military campaigns. These volumes have been written by civilians and officers of high rank, and consequently the story of the private soldier's life has never been told. That life was made up of events and surrounded by circum stances of the most interesting character. Not interesting to the soldier alone, but of interest to his friends, and all who enjoy the fruits of victory purchased by his sacrifices and patriotism. It was to supply, to a limited extent, this want so universally felt that the writer consented to furnish The Sketches of Army Life for the Republican Journal, of Belfast, Maine. The officers had spoken, but this was a voice from the ranks. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Recollections of the Civil War: With the Leaders at Washington and in the Field in the Sixties It is proper to note the circumstance that the three years covered by Mr. Dana's Recollections as here recorded constitute the only term during which he held any public office, and the only break in more than half a century of continuous experience in the making of newspapers. His connection with the Gov ernment during those momentous years is an episode in the story of a life that throbbed from boyhood to age with intellectual energy, and was crowded with practical achievement. Excerpt from Recollections of Thomas D. Duncan: A Confederate Soldier Within the happy family circle, from which my children are now gone, these oft recounted recollections became a part of their education. I permitted them to turn the pages of my memory, as the leaves of a book, that they might learn the vanished glory of the old South - the loving loyalty and the sad travail of her people. And I trust that they learned also that our unfor tunate Civil War - now, thank God, nearly sixty years behind us - was a clash of honest principles. Excerpt from A Soldier's Recollections Leaves From the Diary, of a Young Confederate, 1910: With an Oration on the Motives and Aims, of the Soldiers of the South I have set down in the pages that follows some of my experiences and observations during my service with the Army of Northern Virginia, first as a private soldier, then as a staff officer, and finally as a chaplain in the field. I served in the ranks under Gen. Jos. E. Johnston and Gen. Thos. J. Jackson; as a staff officer under Brigadier-Gen. Geo. H. Steuart in the army of Gen. R. E. Lee; and as a chaplain in the Second Virginia Cavalry under Col. Thos. T. Munford, in the brigade of Gen. Fitzhugh Lee. It has not been my purpose to write a history of the campaigns in which I took so humble a part, but simply to present a few pen and ink sketches of the life and experience of a Confederate soldier, in the hope that I may thereby contribute in some small degree to a better understanding of the spirit of the epoch - both of the soldiers who fought the battles, and of the people on whose behalf they dared and suffered what they did. In telling this plain and unvarnished story I have been aided by the diary, or rather the diaries, which I kept during the war, and from which I have freely quoted, just as they were written, without recasting the sentences, or improving the style, or toning down the sentiments they contain. Excerpt from Recollections of the Civil War: With Many Original Diary Entries and Letters Written From the Seat of War, and With Annotated References In fairness to the author who did not live to correct and perfect his work, an effort has been made to verify each event. The task has been arduous and difficult, and the results, which in some cases are unsatisfactory, and for which the author is in no way responsible, are shown by references in foot-notes to the authorities. Excerpt from Recollections of a Cavalryman of the Civil War After Fifty Years: 1861-1865 Preface. Ears ago at one of the reunions of the Ninth Ohio Cavalry it was voted that I should write a 'history of our regiment. I was so occupied in business then that I could not find time to comply with their wishes. Now that I have had sufficient time I have carried out their request. With the help of some of my old comrades, I have undertaken to dig through the accumulated memories of fifty years and record incidents, many of them commonplace enough to us then, but to which time has added a charm which warms our hearts to each other and to this dear land of ours.
