They find the boy by the swimming pool, dolls floating on its surface. Inside the house, his teacher lies dead. But he claims to remember nothing... Marsac is a quiet town in the Pyrenees, best known for its elite university. But when one of its professors is murdered, it becomes clear that the tranquil surface is a lie. The chief suspect is the son of Commandant Servaz's university sweetheart; and when she implores him to investigate, he cannot refuse. To close the case, Servaz must delve into his own past and re-open old and terrible wounds. It will be his most dangerous - and his most personal - investigation yet. A Song for Drowned Souls is the new novel by international bestseller Bernard Minier, author of The Frozen Dead, which was selected by The Sunday Times as one of the best crime novels in recent years.

On any weekend in Texas, Czech polka music enlivens dance halls and drinking establishments as well as outdoor church picnics and festivals. The songs heard at these venues are the living music of an ethnic community created by immigrants who started arriving in Central Texas in the mid-nineteenth century from what is now the Czech Republic. Today, the members of this community speak English but their songs are still sung in Czech. Czech Songs in Texas includes sixty-one songs, mostly polkas and waltzes. The songs themselves are beloved heirlooms ranging from ceremonial music with origins in Moravian wedding traditions to exuberant polkas celebrating the pleasures of life. For each song, the book provides music notation and Czech lyrics with English translation. An essay explores the song’s European roots, its American evolution, and the meaning of its lyrics and lists notable performances and recordings. In addition to the songs and essays, Frances Barton provides a chapter on the role of music in the Texas Czech ethnic community, and John K. Novak surveys Czech folk and popular music in its European home. The book both documents a specific musical inheritance and serves as a handbook for learning about a culture through its songs. As folklorist and polka historian James P. Leary writes in his foreword, “Barton and Novak take us on a poetic, historical, and ethnographic excursion deep into a community’s expressive heartland. Their Czech Songs in Texas just might be the finest extant annotated anthology of any American immigrant/ethnic group's regional song tradition.”

IT’S NOT JUST THE WATERS RISING... Flash floods devastate Britain. But the terror is just starting, as an army of the living dead emerge from the waters to hunt down the survivors. For Katja, after a year held captive by a brutal vice ring, it’s a constant fight to stay alive, but also a chance to win her freedom. McTarn, an ex-soldier haunted by his past, is press-ganged into a mission to retrieve a scientist from an isolated village. When floods cut them off, he has to fight both the walking dead and his own demons to protect his men. Stiles is the man they sent McTarn to fetch. Although apparently insane, he may be McTarn and Katja’s only chance to halt the legions of the dead closing in on their refuge in the bleak Lancashire hills. And if they fail, death will be the least they have to suffer…

In Irish Folk and Fairy Tales William Butler Yeats delivers a vast collection of stories, songs, and poetry of his home country and beloved Irelandâ??s historical and legendary past. These writings helped secure for Yeatsâ?? recognition as a leading proponent of Irish nationalism and Irish cultural independence, and to also help Yeats spearhead the Irish Literary Revival. Originally published in two separate books near the end of the nineteenth century, these tales preserve a rich and charming heritage in a superbly authentic Irish voice. In this volume, extraordinary Irish characters are brought to life through the incandescent poetic voice of W.B. Yeats, who as the first Irish writer to be honored with the Nobel Peace Prize in Literature in 1923. Born and educated in Dublin, from an early age Yeats was fascinated by both Irish legends and the occult, which are brilliantly visited in Irish Folk and Fairy Tales. These legendary stories include Trooping Fairies, a Banshee, Kings and Queens, Giants, Devils and the enigmatic Irish Leprechaun that will delight and entertain readers of all ages. Poets, readers, children and adults will all fall in love with these classic Irish Folk and Fairy Tales from one of the worldâ??s greatest poets, W. B. Yeats.

Gathered by the renowned Irish poet, playwright, and essayist William Butler Yeats, the sixty-five tales and poems in this delightful collection uniquely capture the rich heritage of the Celtic imagination. Filled with legends of village ghosts, fairies, demons, witches, priests, and saints, these stories evoke both tender pathos and lighthearted mirth and embody what Yeats describes as “the very voice of the people, the very pulse of life.” “The impact of these tales doesn’t stop with Yeats, or Joyce, or Oscar Wilde,” writes Paul Muldoon in his Foreword, “for generations of readers in Ireland and throughout the world have found them flourishing like those persistent fairy thorns.”
