Excerpt from A Source Book of Problems for Geometry The author is fully aware of the danger involved in offering this book to teachers of geometry. At present there is a widespread tendency in education to substitute amusement for downright work. This temptation presents itself in varied and subtle forms to all teachers. Even the best teacher cannot hope to escape. He must be continually on his guard lest his work call forth mere superficial attention and begin and end in entertainment. One form of this temptation may be found in the copying of designs. Hot only may one spend more time than is profitable on this work, but unless care is exercised in the selection of the designs, all of the time spent may be wasted. Many interesting figures that might be suggested for this purpose are so complicated that pupils cannot reasonably be expected to determine all of the lines by constructions already mastered. If, attracted by the beauty of the copy, the pupil is allowed to present a result that will not bear detailed geometrical analysis, entertainment has been substituted for education. A design which is not an easily recognized application of a known construction is certainly of doubtful value. Many of the designs in this book are very simple. A few are complicated, but even these can be so broken up that only the simple part need be given to the class. While it must remain true that for training in clear thinking and accurate expression nothing in the teaching of geometry can take the place of abstract originals and of formal proof of theorems, nevertheless, exercises of the type here given have a unique and important place.
