This book examines the interaction between nationalism and feminism in modern Polish women's physical culture from the late nineteenth century until the end of the twentieth century. Unlike most western countries where sportswomen were typically marginalized in their athletic endeavors, Polish female athletes earned greater respect and recognition in their physical culture. On many occasions, and for varied reasons, women's athleticism in Poland was a source of immense pride and prestige for both the state and society. This form of acceptance, however, does not suggest that sportswomen faced no discrimination in their efforts to become sportive. Women's physicality remained the subject of intense debate, particularly when the socio-economic conditions worsened and threatened the survival of families. Still, despite the patriarchal and other barricades, the Polish national struggles for independence and the emergence of the "New Woman" created significant institutional and ideological spaces for sportswomen to build their physical culture. Accordingly, this book enriches the histories of Poland and modern Europe, as well as women's and sports studies.

This book is an ethnographically-informed interview study of the ways in which middle-class mothers from three Israeli social-cultural groups – immigrants from the former Soviet Union, Palestinian Israelis and Jewish native-born Israelis – share and differ in their understandings of a ‘proper’ education for their children and of their role in ensuring this. The book highlights the importance of education in contemporary society, and argues that mothers' modes of engagement in their children's education are formed at the junction of class, culture and social positioning. It examines how cultural models such as intensive mothering, parental anxiety, individualism, and ‘concerted cultivation’ play out in the lives of these mothers and their children, shaping different ways of participating in the middle class. Studentische Verbindungen galten bislang als singuläres Phänomen des deutschsprachigen Raumes. Die vorliegende Studie bricht mit dieser Vorstellung. Sie beleuchtet systematisch, wie das bekannte Verbindungsmodell ab dem 19. Jahrhundert durch den Kontakt zwischen deutschen und polnischen Studierenden gen Osten 'wandert' und zur Gründung eines unabhängigen polnischen Verbindungswesens führt. Am Beispiel von unterschiedlichen Verbindungsformen wird der Transfer deutschen Brauchtums und dessen Veränderung in einem neuen nationalen Rahmen nachvollzogen. Die Studie legt eine kaum bekannte Subkultur und deren Duellpraktiken offen und stellt damit bislang konstatierte deutsche Charakteristika des Duells in Frage. Sie lenkt auch den Blick auf eine spezifisch studentische Ebene der konfliktträchtigen deutsch-polnischen Beziehungen. Im Fokus der Studie steht zudem das Selbstverständnis als Bildungselite, die Haltung zu politischen und religiösen Fragen sowie zur jüdischen Minorität.
