She’s unconventional . . . Christmas is Lady Catherine “Kitty” Egerton’s favorite time of year, and even though the temperature is mild and there’s little hope for snow, life couldn’t be better. Charles Dickens’s new novel is proving to be all the rage. Even more diverting, she’s accepted her brother’s invitation to travel to London with a childhood friend on the London and Birmingham Railway, to inspect a workhouse on Saffron Hill. The journey allows Kitty to help the poor, and to access the bookstore where Dickens’s latest book is sold. But in an irony of fate, the book is out of stock, and she shamefully accepts several copies from a mysterious donor, risking her reputation. He’s not who he says he is . . . Bartholomew “Bart” Fernsby netted his worth speculating on the railroad. But to whom much is given, more is required. Haunted by a scandalous past and determined not to let history repeat itself, Bart takes on the plight of the East End by becoming one of the founding members of a Poor Law Union seeking to bring education to the poorest sections of London. To that end, he’s enlisted a friend to help raise funds for Field Lane Ragged School, a workhouse Charles Dickens visited three months earlier. The children housed there idolize the writer, and as a gift to them, Bart purchases multiple copies of A Christmas Carol with plans to distribute them to those who’ve learned how to read. There’s only one problem—Bart hates Christmas. Can a sprig of mistletoe deliver a miracle?

It was a sprig of mistletoe that changed chef Nicholas Craig. A sprig of mistletoe with a dash of salt. Nick is not much of a whiz in school except in domestic studies. So it's no surprise that he forgoes regular college for cooking school where he meets Georges Roznoir or Rosie. The school is so strict with separating the females with the males that anyone caught inside the room of the other gender will be kicked out. Nick is disappointed that his cherry will not be popped by any of the girls in the school. Just as well because when the school Christmas party arrives and the students had a little too much to drink, Nick grabs Rosie and kisses him under the mistletoe. From kisses to sucks to full-on intimacy, Nick and Rosie bake their cakes and eat it too. But the school is only a two-year program. What happens when they graduate and are thrown into a sea of more delicious pastries? *sexy gay romance for mature audiences Sample 1: I then stood up and with the sprig of mistletoe in my hand, got up onto my bed and straddled my legs to stand on and fixed it on the horrible lamp shade that hung from the ceiling. I nearly fell over when I got down but was satisfied to see it hanging there and beckoned Rosie to come over to me as I now stood beneath it. 'I haven't wished you a Merry Christmas yet, ' I slurred. 'Come and give me a kiss.' He stood up, nearly falling over and came round between the beds and into my arms. 'Merry Christmas, ' I said and held him close to me and we kissed. Sample 2: 'Nicky, ' he began after giving me a kiss. He now always called me Nicky when in bed ever since we had started fucking each other. 'Nicky. I'm going to miss this, ' he said as he held my manhood in his hand, slowly moving it as he gently squeezed it. I turned my face to him and saw that he had tears in his eyes. 'Also being in bed with you every night. Can't we somehow stay together?' Our minds might have been on different tracks, but we were going in the same direction for I had had the same thought running through my mind. 'Rosie, Rosie, darling, ' I said, my voice a little choked up with emotion at seeing those tears of his. 'I can't think of anywhere else I'd rather be than with you. I've not been looking forward to this course ending and..., and us having to part.' Holding his dick in my hand doing the same as he was doing to me. 'Have you any ideas, for I have?'

Knowledge of plant names can give insight into largely forgotten beliefs. For example, the common red poppy is known as "Blind Man" due to an old superstitious belief that if the poppy were put to the eyes it would cause blindness. Many plant names derived from superstition, folk lore, or primal beliefs. Other names are purely descriptive and can serve to explain the meaning of the botanical name. For example, Beauty-Berry is the name given to the American shrub that belongs to the genus Callicarpa. Callicarpa is Greek for beautiful fruit. Still other names come from literary sources providing rich detail of the transmission of words through the ages.Conceived as part of the author's wider interest in plant and tree lore and ethnobotanical studies, this fully revised edition of Elsevier's Dictionary of Plant Names and Their Origins contains over 30,000 vernacular and literary English names of plants. Wild and cultivated plants alike are identified by the botanical name. Further detail provides a brief account of the meaning of the name and detailed commentary on common usage. * Includes color images * Inclusive of all Latin terms with vernacular derivatives * The most comprehensive guide for plant scientists, linguists, botanists, and historians

In ancient Ireland there were 365 different parts to the body, and a different plant to cure each part. So the wild plants of Ireland are bound up in our culture and folklore from the earliest times. To arry a four-leaved shamrock brings luck in gambling, while putting nine ivy leaves under her pillow means a girl will dream of her future husband. Here plants are described in seasonal order, a perspective dating back to our ancestors. Different aspects of plant folklore are examined following a brief history of traditional herbal medicine in Ireland. Included are their roles in magical protection, in charms and spells (especially for love!), as emblems in children's games, and in Irish place names.

The primary aim of this book is to explain the remarkable rule which regulated the succession to the priesthood of Diana at Aricia. When I first set myself to solve the problem more than thirty years ago, I thought that the solution could be propounded very briefly, but I soon found that to render it probable or even intelligible it was necessary to discuss certain more general questions, some of which had hardly been broached before. In successive editions the discussion of these and kindred topics has occupied more and more space, the enquiry has branched out in more and more directions, until the two volumes of the original work have expanded into twelve. Meantime a wish has often been expressed that the book should be issued in a more compendious form. This abridgment is an attempt to meet the wish and thereby to bring the work within the range of a wider circle of readers. While the bulk of the book has been greatly reduced, I have endeavoured to retain its leading principles, together with an amount of evidence sufficient to illustrate them clearly. The language of the original has also for the most part been preserved, though here and there the exposition has been somewhat condensed. In order to keep as much of the text as possible I have sacrificed all the notes, and with them all exact references to my authorities. Readers who desire to ascertain the source of any particular statement must therefore consult the larger work, which is fully documented and provided with a complete bibliography.
