Six months have passed since Taya, Guntharr and the others recovered the damaged Talisman of Alterian, the only hope to proving that Taya is the rightful heir. With little to go on, Firebane sets out with Rift for a distant monastery where the elves stored copies of their ancient writings. Uncovering a potential lead, the two make their way back to the sanctuary when they are ambushed by a barbarian and rogue Battle Wolf who knows of Rift. Elsewhere, a faction of elves that survived the assault on Silverwood, struggle against an unknown plague that is threatening their outpost’s existence by killing off the crop that they use to sustain themselves. While trying to hold off increasing attacks from the dark creatures of Nightfall and with little men to spare, General Alderthorn sends out a trio of men, led by his only son, Farrian, to search out a gifted spy who can infiltrate the land and discover the source of the plague. Guntharr’s suspicions are aroused as rumors have surfaced throughout the five realms that certain elf groups have forsaken the kingdom of Silverwood and pledged loyalty to no one. Farrian’s pleas for help conflict against Guntharr’s commitment to protect Taya, but then news from Firebane hints that the next piece to the Talisman may reside in Nightfall. Arnethia’s drive to prove herself causes Guntharr to relent and follow the elves back toward Nightfall knowing they could be walking into a trap. Without a plan, Arnethia hurries off on her mission into the land of Nightfall to uncover the whereabouts of the gem and possibly the cause for the plague effecting the General’s outpost. Her persistence pays off, but in the process she is captured by a pair of creatures that have the ability to change into any living creature. Captured and surrounded by an army of evil, Arnethia must rely on a newfound resource to help her overcome her fear, save her friends and return the second gem of the talisman.

Espionage, passion and battlefield peril: the fate of one remarkable family unfolds against the Second World War’s Pacific Theatre in Daniel Kalla’s spellbinding Nightfall Over Shanghai, the triumphant concluding volume in his Shanghai trilogy It’s 1944. The Japanese are losing the war. But Shanghai is more dangerous than ever, particularly for the Adler family. After fleeing Nazi Europe, Dr. Franz Adler and his teenage daughter, Hannah, have adjusted to life in their strange adopted city, but they are now imprisoned in the Shanghai ghetto for refugee Jews. Franz is compelled to work as a surgeon for the hated Japanese military, while Sunny, his beloved Eurasian wife and fellow surgeon, struggles to keep the city’s undersupplied refugee hospital functioning. When a mysterious injured man arrives at the hospital, Sunny is recruited into a spy ring, providing crucial strategic information to the Allies. Inadvertently, Hannah is also pulled into the perilous operation, just as she is drawn to the controversial but growing movement of Zionism. When the Japanese launch a major new offensive against the Chinese, Franz is sent inland to work on the frontlines as a field doctor. There, he must contend with his tangled loyalties, aerial bombings and his uncertain feelings for a vulnerable Canadian nurse. In 1945, American B-52 bombings place all the city’s residents in grave danger. While the war seems to be winding down in the Far East, many questions remain unanswered for the Adlers. As the bombers circle ominously overhead, the family must now struggle for more than just safety. For the first time in many war-riven years, they now face the challenge and prospect of forging a hopeful path forward for the future. But first, they must find a way to survive.

"You're going to hell, Jack Nightingale." These are the words that ended Jack Nightingale's career as a police negotiator. Now a struggling private detective, the chilling words return with a vengeance when Jack inherits a mansion with a priceless library--and a terrifying warning from a man who claims to be his father. Nightingale quickly learns his soul was sold at birth and a devil will come to claim it on his thirty-third birthday, which is just three short weeks away. It's a hard pill to swallow. He doesn't believe in Hell and probably doesn't believe in Heaven either. But when people close to him start to die horribly, he is led to the inescapable conclusion that real evil may be at work. And if he doesn't find a way out, he'll be damned for eternity. Dripping with brooding intensity, unrelenting suspense, and surprising wit, United Kingdom thriller master Stephen Leather's first book in The Nightingale Series is a riveting, heart-stopping mystery with extraordinary range and power.

Peter and Rebecca Harris: mid-forties denizens of Manhattan's SoHo, nearing the apogee of committed careers in the arts—he a dealer, she an editor. With a spacious loft, a college-age daughter in Boston, and lively friends, they are admirable, enviable contemporary urbanites with every reason, it seems, to be happy. Then Rebecca's much younger look-alike brother, Ethan (known in thefamily as Mizzy, "the mistake"), shows up for a visit. A beautiful, beguiling twenty-three-year-old with a history of drug problems, Mizzy is wayward, at loose ends, looking for direction. And in his presence, Peter finds himself questioning his artists, their work, his career—the entire world he has so carefully constructed. Like his legendary, Pulitzer Prize–winning novel, The Hours, Michael Cunningham's masterly new novel is a heartbreaking look at the way we live now. Full of shocks and aftershocks, it makes us think and feel deeply about the uses and meaning of beauty and the place of love in our lives.
