This one-stop reference is a perfect resource for anyone interested in the North and South Poles, whether their interest relates to history, wildlife, or the geography of these regions in the news today. Global warming, a hot topic among scholars of geography and science, has led to increased interest in studying the earth's polar ice caps, which seem to be melting at an alarming rate. This accessible, two-volume encyclopedia lays a foundation for understanding global warming and other issues related to the North and South Poles. Approximately 350 alphabetically arranged, user-friendly entries treat key terms and topics, important expeditions, major figures, territorial disputes, and much more. Readers will find information on the explorations of Cook, Scott, Amundsen, and Peary; articles on humpback whales, penguins, and polar bears; and explanations of natural phenomena like the Aurora Australis and the polar night. Expedition tourism is covered, as is climate change. Ideal for high school and undergraduate students studying geography, social studies, history, and earth science, the encyclopedia will provide a better understanding of these remote and unfamiliar lands and their place in today's world.

Young armchair adventurers can travel to the topmost point on the globe and learn all about the vast region surrounding the North Pole. From the #1 New York Times Best-Selling Who Was? series comes Where Is?, a series that tells the stories of world-famous landmarks and natural wonders and features a fold-out map! It might seem lonely at the top of the world, but the North Pole is teeming with life! Polar bears, walruses, and arctic seals make their home on sea ice that can be nine feet thick while the Inuit and other indigenous peoples continue their traditions and means for survival in this harsh climate. Along with the early twentieth-century story of Robert Peary’s egomaniacal quest to reach the exact spot of the North Pole, this is an exciting new addition to the Where Is? series.

Cybersecurity And Resilience In The Arctic written by B.D. Trump and has been published by IOS Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-07-24 with Computers categories.

Until recently, the Arctic was almost impossible for anyone other than indigenous peoples and explorers to traverse. Pervasive Arctic sea ice and harsh climatological conditions meant that the region was deemed incapable of supporting industrial activity or a Western lifestyle. In the last decade, however, that longstanding reality has been dramatically and permanently altered. Receding sea ice, coupled with growing geopolitical disputes over Arctic resources, territory, and transportation channels, has stimulated efforts to exploit newly-open waterways, to identify and extract desirable resources, and to leverage industrial, commercial, and transportation opportunities emerging throughout the region. This book presents papers from the NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) Governance for Cyber Security and Resilience in the Arctic. Held in Rovaniemi, Finland, from 27-30 January 2019, the workshop brought together top scholars in cybersecurity risk assessment, governance, and resilience to discuss potential analytical and governing strategies and offer perspectives on how to improve critical Arctic infrastructure against various human and natural threats. The book is organized in three sections according to topical group and plenary discussions at the meeting on: cybersecurity infrastructure and threats, analytical strategies for infrastructure threat absorption and resilience, and legal frameworks and governance options to promote cyber resilience. Summaries and detailed analysis are included within each section as summary chapters in the book. The book provides a background on analytical tools relevant to risk and resilience analytics, including risk assessment, decision analysis, supply chain management and resilience analytics. It will allow government, native and civil society groups, military stakeholders, and civilian practitioners to understand better on how to enhance the Arctic’s resilience against various natural and anthropogenic challenges.

A dystopian Christmas adventure based on the legend of Saint Nicholas and his hidden civilization of loyal followers. Imagine 1984 with elements of The Hunger Games at the North Pole with an uplifting spiritual twist. It's Christmas Eve, and the direct descendant of the prophet, Nicholas of Myra, takes flight. Exuberant followers cheer for Nicholas as he embarks on his fateful journey. A brilliant decorated tree shines in the middle of the square. This iconic scene is manicured and manipulated for the rest of the world. It's all a lie. The secret battle for control of the North Pole is about to turn violent. The devout believers of Nicholas have broken into two factions. The ambitious central church known as La Nordica controls all toy production and most aspects of life on this remote island in the Arctic Circle, but the other faction holds a key that could bring the church crashing down. The tense truce is about to break, and only young Preston from Evergreen Sector 23 can save the islanders from a future of brutal oppression and death.
