This volume presents the historical events surrounding Norway's physicians during the Nazi occupation of Norway. Throughout, two principle themes are interwoven: the valour, dedication and contribution of Norwegian physicians to the Resistance Movement and the country's century-long progression from a position of official intolerance to a humanitarian state that functions at times as the conscience of the world.

**NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER** ‘A sort of survival book, a sort of symptom-diagnosis manual in terms of losing your democracy and what tyranny and authoritarianism look like up close’ Rachel Maddow 'These 128 pages are a brief primer in every important thing we might have learned from the history of the last century, and all that we appear to have forgotten' Observer History does not repeat, but it does instruct. In the twentieth century, European democracies collapsed into fascism, Nazism and communism. These were movements in which a leader or a party claimed to give voice to the people, promised to protect them from global existential threats, and rejected reason in favour of myth. European history shows us that societies can break, democracies can fall, ethics can collapse, and ordinary people can find themselves in unimaginable circumstances. History can familiarise, and it can warn. Today, we are no wiser than the Europeans who saw democracy yield to totalitarianism in the twentieth century. But when the political order seems imperilled, our advantage is that we can learn from their experience to resist the advance of tyranny. Now is a good time to do so.

The great events in history are those where, upon special occasions, a man or a people have made a stand against tyranny, and have preserved or advanced freedom for the people. Sometimes tyranny has taken the form of the oppression of the many by the few in the same nation, and sometimes it has been the oppression of a weak nation by a stronger one. The successful revolt against tyranny, the terrible conflict resulting in the emancipation of a people, has always been the favorite theme of the historian, marking as it does a step in the progress of mankind from a savage to a civilized state.

"Arthur Franklin Perkins is a largely forgotten figure, yet the story of his fight against ecclesiastical tyranny illuminates the Presbyterian Conflict of the 1930's. For the bold initiative of forming the Crescent Lake Bible Camp for rural young people, Perkins was prosecuted and convicted by his church - the Presbyterian Church in the USA. Leaving the PCUSA. Perkins became a constituting member of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church. He was the Convener and first Moderator of the Presbytery of Wisconsin of the OPC. Holding fundamentalist convictions about the Bible, the person and redemptive work of Christ, the nature of salvation and the Christian life, Perkins paid a heavy price for his courageous stand. This is the tragic tale of one man's fight for liberty of conscience according to the word of God"--
