The anthropologist has to gather his facts from a greater variety of sources than any other writer, and from the very nature of his subject he is obliged to quote incessantly. The following pages embody the results of more than twelve years' research in the libraries of America and Europe. In weaving my quotations into a continuous fabric I have adopted a plan which I believe to be ingenious, and which certainly saves space and annoyance. Instead of citing the full titles of books every time they are referred to either in the text or in footnotes, I merely give the author's name and the page number, if only one of his books is referred to; and if there are several books, I give the initials - say Brinton, M. N. W, 130; which means Brinton's Myths of the New World, page 130. The key to the abbreviations will be found at the end of the volume in the bibliography, which also includes an author's index, sepa rate from the index of subjects. This avoids the repetition of titles or of the customary useless loo. Cit, and spares the reader the annoyance of constant interruption of his reading to glance at the bottom of the page. The man on the ground watched him; there was froth in the comers of his mouth. "Git back!" whispered Bates, but his voice and hand trembled. "Kent," he stammered, "won't ye hang?" The man on the ground glared. "Ye've got to die, Kent," he urged; "they all say so. Ask Lefty Dyce; ask Carrots. - He's got to swing fur it - ain't he, Tully? - Kent, fur God's sake, swing fur these here gents!" The man on the ground panted; his bright eyes never moved. After a moment Tully sprang on him again. There was a flurry of leaves, a crackle, a gasp and a grunt, then the thumping and thrashing of two bodies writhing in the brush. Dyce and Carrots jumped on the prostrate men. Lefty Sawyer caught the rope again, but the jute strands gave way and he stumbled. Tully began to scream, "He's chokin' me!" Dyce staggered out into the open, moaning over a broken wrist. "Shoot!" shouted Lefty Sawyer, and dragged Tully aside. "Shoot, Jim Bates! Shoot straight, b'God!" "Git back!" gasped Bates, rising from the fallen log. The crowd parted right and left; a quick report rang out - another - another. Then from the whirl of smoke a tall form staggered, dealing blows - blows that sounded sharp as the crack of a whip. "He's off! Shoot straight!" they cried. Excerpt from History of the Primitive Methodist Church I count it an honour to write this brief foreword to this, the latest history of our Church. There must be few Primitive Methodists who are not acquainted with Mr. Kendall's smaller history published upwards of a quarter of a century ago, and with his "Principles and Polity of the Primitive Methodist Church." These little volumes, for many years, have been text-books for Local Preachers and for Ministerial Candidates. On one of my visits to the late Bishop of Durham I found these two books on the study table, and afterwards discovered that Dr. Westcott had read them with intentness and interest. The Standard History of our Church was written too by Mr. Kendall, and will immortalise his name. He was for nine years Connexional Editor, and in 1901 the President of Conference. The Book Committee felt that a smaller history was needed, bringing the story up to date. The present is practically a new volume. The historic imagination, the spiritual insight, the literary grace, which we all associate with the author, are all in evidence in these pages. The book has been written through love of the subject, with gratitude for the past, and with confidence for the future. The mention of Mr. Kendall brings his devoted and capable wife into mind. She it is who has been at his side during long years of physical weakness, and only her wonderful care has made possible the continuance and success of his literary labours. We greet them in this foreword, and commend the volume to all our people, and to the readers of other Churches.
