"The abyssal plain. If you could walk directly into the sea, through the surf and away from the land, you would be likely to descend a gentle slope for two or three days. The water over your head would gradually become deeper, until the surface was about 200m above, say two average city blocks away. About this time the gradient would begin to increase, and soon you are walking quite steeply downhill, with the surface rapidly receding. The sediment beneath your feet will thicken as you approach the edge of the continent, where the soil and debris washed from the land eventually accumulates. At the end of a long day's walk the gradient eases and you stride out onto a prairie that stretches away into the far distance, flat and featureless, or sometimes with rolling hills or even studded with sudden abrupt mountains. The surface is now quite far away, not mere city blocks but the whole downtown core of a large city distant from where you stand. You have arrived at the edge of the abyssal plain. The details of your walk will vary according to where you start out, and might be quite different if you begin in eastern Canada and walk into the Atlantic, say, or in western Canada and walk into the North Pacific. In either case, though, you will eventually reach the abyssal plain, where the last of the land has been left behind and nothing is familiar"--

Expedition Into Empire written by Martin Thomas and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-09-04 with History categories.

Expeditionary journeys have shaped our world, but the expedition as a cultural form is rarely scrutinized. This book is the first major investigation of the conventions and social practices embedded in team-based exploration. In probing the politics of expedition making, this volume is itself a pioneering journey through the cultures of empire. With contributions from established and emerging scholars, Expedition into Empire plots the rise and transformation of expeditionary journeys from the eighteenth century until the present. Conceived as a series of spotlights on imperial travel and colonial expansion, it roves widely: from the metropolitan centers to the ends of the earth. This collection is both rigorous and accessible, containing lively case studies from writers long immersed in exploration, travel literature, and the dynamics of cross-cultural encounter.

From a Bancroft Prize-winning historian, the "gripping" tale of a shipwrecked Spaniard who walked across America in the sixteenth century (Financial Times) In 1528, a mission set out from Spain to colonize Florida. But the expedition went horribly wrong: Delayed by a hurricane, knocked off course by a colossal error of navigation, and ultimately doomed by a disastrous decision to separate the men from their ships, the mission quickly became a desperate journey of survival. Of the four hundred men who had embarked on the voyage, only four survived-three Spaniards and an African slave. This tiny band endured a horrific march through Florida, a harrowing raft passage across the Louisiana coast, and years of enslavement in the American Southwest. They journeyed for almost ten years in search of the Pacific Ocean that would guide them home, and they were forever changed by their experience. The men lived with a variety of nomadic Indians and learned several indigenous languages. They saw lands, peoples, plants, and animals that no outsider had ever before seen. In this enthralling tale of four castaways wandering in an unknown land, Andrés Reséndez brings to life the vast, dynamic world of North America just a few years before European settlers would transform it forever.
