This useful student edition presents ten of Seneca's best-known letters as well as selections from two of his philosophical essays, De providentia and De vita beata. A leading proponent of Stoicism, Seneca has influenced writers and thinkers throughout the centuries. Seneca's letters and essays are ideally suitable for intermediate-level Latin students. Written in a clear and crisp style, they are universal in scope and psychological in orientation. Thus students can appreciate these works without having detailed knowledge of the historical period in which they were composed. In addition, in our own era of electronic entertainment and conspicuous consumption, Seneca's advocacy of a simple life resonates deeply with modern readers. M.D. Usher has arranged the selections by theme, length, and degree of difficulty. Each selection is introduced by a brief summary of its significance. Usher also provides line-by-line notes on grammar, style, and content, and a vocabulary listing all Latin words found in the texts.

Philosophy And Community In Seneca S Prose written by Carey Seal and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-04-09 with Philosophy categories.

The Roman philosopher Seneca addressed himself to the question of how we ought to live in letters and treatises that have engaged the attention of readers from his own day to the present. A committed, if critical and eccentric, adherent of Stoicism, he gives us a set of reflections on the good life that are rich both in philosophical subtlety and in vivid engagement with day-to-day life in ancient Rome. Philosophy and Community in Seneca's Prose proposes a new understanding of the relationship between these two facets of Seneca's achievement, examining how he balances the Socratic imperative to subject one's life to rational scrutiny, on the one hand, with the claims of Roman moral tradition on the other. Carey Seal argues that we should think of Seneca neither as a spokesman for Stoicism who seizes opportunistically upon the data of Roman social life to make his case, nor as an expositor of the inherited values of the Roman elite in the language of Stoic philosophy. Rather, Seneca should be understood as someone intensely interested in the question of philosophy's social entanglements and presuppositions. Seneca's use of Roman politics and of the institution of slavery in elaborating his ideal of a life guided by reason is carefully examined in the book.

This volume is the first systematic study of Seneca’s interaction with earlier literature of a variety of genres and traditions. It examines this interaction and engagement in his prose works, offering interpretative readings that are at once groundbreaking and stimulating to further study. Focusing on the Dialogues, the Naturales quaestiones, and the Moral Epistles, the volume includes multi- perspectival studies of Seneca’s interaction with all the great Latin epics (Lucretius, Vergil and Ovid), and discussions of how Seneca’s philosophical thought is informed by Hellenistic doxography, forensic rhetoric and declamation, the Homeric tradition, Euripidean tragedy and Greco-Roman mythology. The studies analyzes the philosophy behind Seneca’s incorporating exact quotations from earlier tradition (including his criteria of selectivity) and Seneca’s interaction with ideas, trends and techniques from different sources, in order to elucidate his philosophical ideas and underscore his original contribution to the discussion of established philosophical traditions. They also provide a fresh interpretation of moral issues with particular application to the Roman worldview as fashioned by the mos maiorum. The volume, finally, features detailed discussion of the ways in which Seneca, the author of philosophical prose, puts forward his stance towards poetics and figures himself as a poet. Intertextuality in Seneca’s Philosophical Writings will be of interest not only to those working on Seneca’s philosophical works, but also to anyone working on Latin literature and intertextuality in the ancient world.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s the Keowee Courier was Oconee County's dominant newspaper. An important aspect of the Courier was weekly reports by community correspondents from throughout the county, who would tell about the day-to-day goings-on in their communities. One of those communities, of course, was Seneca, and this book consists of a compilation of news reports from the Seneca correspondents, spanning the period 1888-1918, specifically from the years 1888, 1889, 1898, 1899, 1900, 1901, 1902, 1903, 1904, 1905, 1906, 1907, 1908, 1909, 1910 1911, 1914 and 1918. Although several excellent Seneca history books have been published, the author feels that this book will add an extra dimension by focusing on the day-to-day, week-to-week, year-to-year goings on as Senecaites (as they were called back then) adapted to the coming of cotton mills, automobiles, electric lights, etc.
