Abstract: ABSTRACT of thesis entitled The Thesis/Dissertation Title. submitted by Yiu Kit Man For the degree of Master of Education at the University of Hong Kong August, 2004 This research compares the context and level of environmental awareness and understanding among young people with different social capitals embedded in family and school contexts in two contrasting types of Hong Kong schools, namely an aided school and an international school. Rresearch objectives were to examine the following questions: (1) what is the level of environmental awareness in each of the two schools? (2) What is the level of social capital inherent in parent-children relations in the families? (3) What is the level of social capital inherent in teacher-student relations in schools? (4) What are similarities and differences of the level of environmental awareness, social capital inherent in parent-children relations in families, and social capital inherent in teacher-student relations in schools of the two groups of young people? (5) What is the influence of the social capital upon young people's level of environmental awareness and understanding? The methodology was interpretive and comparative emphasizing phenomena studied in their natural settings. Quantitative and qualitative methods were combined through questionnaires and interviews respectively. The findings are based on 170 questionnaires and 12 interviews collected from the young people in the two contrasting schools. The findings show the young people in both schools give the highest priorities among goals in Hong Kong to 'Environmental Protection' and understand the threat of the environmental problems such as water pollution and air pollution in Hong Kong. Nonetheless, their abilities to understand of environmental issues and to identify the sources of environmental problems are limited. The young people in international school are more supportive of the environmental paradigm and have a higher desire to be involved in environmental actions. In the aided school, economic issues such as employment and economic growth seemed to be more important to the young. Parental education and higher socio-economic status seemed to have significant influence on the quality of relationships and interaction between the young people. The young people in the international school seemed to have a higher level of social capital embedded in child-parent relationship than in the aided school. In turn there was more interchange on environmental issue between the young people and their parents in the international school. The school social capital between teachers and students also seemed to be related to levels of environmental awareness. The young people in the international school, however, seemed to have a slightly stronger social network with their teachers. The school climate in the international school seemed to be more liberal and students were encouraged to discuss in lessons. Environmental education in the international school took place in a widely variety of contexts such as in science lessons, geography lessons, garden, and turtle pond at school. In the aided school, although the social capital between students and teachers was not weak, half of the students never discussed environmental issues with their teachers. Geography lessons were as the most signif

It is crucial to provide environmental education to the next generation in order to sustain environmental protection in the long run. Although significant research effort has been dedicated to suggesting immediate actions to protect the environment, few studies have examined the promotion of environmental protection among children, let alone the unique roles of parents and teachers in this education. The current study aims to address this gap in the research by establishing the connection between the environmental concerns of influential parties and behaviour and attitudes towards environmental conservation among local children. It recommends a promotional campaign for the development of environmental education. The study is directed by six objectives: reviewing local children's behaviour and attitudes towards environmental conservation, identifying the measurement scale for environmental behaviour and attitudes, revealing the elements facilitating positive views of environmental issues among the children, and recommending implementable campaign campaigns environmental education policy. Following the data analysis, the results reflect the positive influence of parents and teachers on 14 environmental aspects, where the strongest influence is on minimising disturbance to animals. Additionally, both parents and teachers have their strengths in teaching environmental conduct to children, while the distribution of responsibility would enhance the efficiency of parenting and teaching. This research makes three contributions. First, along with the literature review, the identification of important environmental factors in the local context can be reused in future studies. Second, the study provides a detailed investigation of the importance of parenting and teaching for different environmental aspects in the environmental education of young children. Finally, it makes specific recommendations for parenting and teaching regarding environmental issues to enhance the diffusion of the environmental protection message among children in the early stage.

Consumers who are concerned with environmental issues can use the information on eco-labels to learn the environmental aspects of the products that they buy. The aim of this study is to determine how often the students of higher education pay attention to eco-labels when they are purchasing and the levels of the five internal factors that may motivate the consumers to pay attention to eco-labels. These factors are pro-environmental attitude (willingness to pay higher prices for products with eco-label), perceived consumer effectiveness (how much they believe that individual actions can improve the environment), belief in environment-friendly buying, trust in eco-label and knowledge in eco-labels. This study provided an opportunity to learn if the students consider the environmental aspects when they are buying and what teachers and education professionals can do to encourage the students to pay attention to eco-labels. Three textbooks used for General Studies for Primary students, three textbooks used in Integrated Science for Secondary 1-3 students and six teaching materials published by publishers (there is no textbook for Liberal Studies that is standardized by Education Bureau) used in Science, Technology and the Environment in Liberal Studies for Secondary 4-6 students were reviewed to find if the topic of eco-labeling was mentioned in them. It was found that none of the textbooks used for General Studies for Primary students mentioned eco-labeling, all textbooks used in Integrated Science used for Secondary 1-3 mentioned the Energy Efficiency Label and all teaching material used in liberal studies also mentioned Energy Efficiency Label, among them, one book mentioned the European Union's Eco-label. A survey was carried out to assess how often students pay attention to eco-labels and how much they agree to statements relating to the five internal factors that may motivate them to pay attention to eco-labels. A test was given to assess their knowledge in the Energy Efficiency Label Scheme (EELS) issued by the Electrical and Mechanical Service Department and eco-labels issued to food and wood products respectively. The mean was 2.8(on a scale of 6, in which 1 means strongly disagree and 6 means strongly agree), when asked if they agreed that they often pay attention to eco- label when they were buying 3.5 for pro-environmental attitude, 4.2 for perceived consumer effectiveness, 3.4 for belief in environmental buying, 3.6 for trust in eco-labels and 3.6 in perceived knowledge in eco-labels. 63.2% of the students correctly answered that there are five grades in EELS, 40% of students correctly chose that the lower the grading, the more efficient is the electrical appliance. 8.4% of students correctly chose all five kind of electrical applicants that are mandated to show EEL. 2.1% attempted to name any eco-labels issued to wood products and 3.1% attempted to name any eco-labels issued to food products. It was concluded that students do not often pay attention to eco-labels when they are buying and that the limited knowledge in eco-labels was the potential cause.
