Excerpt from A Study of the Mathematics Used in a High School Course in Physics: Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in Physics in the Graduate School of the University of Illinois, 1913 During recent years there has been a marked decrease in the percentage of high school students taking physics. Many educators charge this loss principally to the mathematics required in the physics course. Hall says, The half-score of text-books in physics I have glanced over seem essentially quantitative, require great exactness, and are largely devoted to precise measurements, with too much and too early insistence on mathematics. He says further that the boy in his teens is in the popular science age; that he wants and needs great wholes, facts in profusion, but few formulae; that he wants demonstrative experiments without being bothered by equations. This book takes a fresh look at programs for advanced studies for high school students in the United States, with a particular focus on the Advanced Placement and the International Baccalaureate programs, and asks how advanced studies can be significantly improved in general. It also examines two of the core issues surrounding these programs: they can have a profound impact on other components of the education system and participation in the programs has become key to admission at selective institutions of higher education. By looking at what could enhance the quality of high school advanced study programs as well as what precedes and comes after these programs, this report provides teachers, parents, curriculum developers, administrators, college science and mathematics faculty, and the educational research community with a detailed assessment that can be used to guide change within advanced study programs.

Physics Education for Students: An Interdisciplinary Approach is a compilation of reviews that highlight new approaches and trends in teaching and learning specific topics on physics to high school and university students. The reviews cover different areas of physics education (laboratory activities, mathematics, philosophy and history) and the ways that learning outcomes can be improved. These distinguished areas can generate complexities and difficulties for students in learning some concepts since the same topics are often presented while following approaches that do not highlight the existing correlations among the involved disciplines. The reviewers discuss an integrated framework for readers with the objective to promote the inclusion of specific laboratory activities and mathematics contents for physics courses addressed to university students, with evidence of the importance of combining a historical and philosophical approach as well. Specific topics in this book include the benefits of active learning in physics education, dialogic best practices in science education, research-based proposals on optical spectroscopy in secondary schools, didactic principles and e-learning in physics and expansive framing in physics laboratories. Physics Education for Students: An Interdisciplinary Approach, with its selection of expert reviews is an interesting read for academics and researchers involved in STEM education, at the school or college level.

It is well known that Physics uses Mathematics, how do they interact with Physics? A characteristic historical example is the "invention" of differ-ential and integral calculus by Newton, who used them in order to found and study the well-known law of gravitational attraction. On the other hand some Mathematical theories seem to be a game of logic without any application. A characteristic example is the group theory of Galois, a well-founded theory which seemed to have no practical application. In the course it became a valuable tool in the hands of Physicists, in the study of symmetries in nature. In this book we try to make known the necessity of the use of Mathematics in Physics and especially in General Physics, which is the first step of familiarization of the future scientist with the subject, but also with science in general. We taught for many years Physics in high school and in the first years of University, giving lectures to students of exact sciences and also theoret-ical Sciences. This experience made clear to us that a majority of pupils and students, no matter which is their level of mathematical knowledge, they have an important difficulty to familiarize themselves with the use of Mathematics in Physics. Most of them think that Mathematics is an addi-tional difficulty, while others, usually a few of them, try to work with eve-ry physics question only approaching it with Mathematic, and the forget that often the Physics reasoning approach is easier and sometimes the only correct one. The book comprises 12 chapters, each of which has the following structure: First we try to introduce the corresponding Mathematical notion from the point of view of Physics, substantiating its necessity on the basis of some Physical problems. Then we present this Mathematical notion and we give basic rela-tions, properties and theorems without proof. At this part, for a better assimilation of the corresponding material a number of examples is in-cluded. They are those that their numeration begins with the letter M. Then, whenever this is possible, a set of basic Physics formulas is given, where the corresponding Mathematical notion is involved. All the above is followed by examples from Physics which involve the use of the corresponding Mathematics. All of these examples have a numeration which begins with the letters PH. Each chapter ends with some unsolved exercises, which involve the corresponding Mathematics. We believe that the structure of this book make it useful for the two final years of High School, for their teachers, but also for University students of the exact sciences of the first two years, perhaps also beyond the second year.

This book reminds students in junior, senior and graduate level courses in physics, chemistry and engineering of the math they may have forgotten (or learned imperfectly) that is needed to succeed in science courses. The focus is on math actually used in physics, chemistry, and engineering, and the approach to mathematics begins with 12 examples of increasing complexity, designed to hone the student's ability to think in mathematical terms and to apply quantitative methods to scientific problems. Detailed illustrations and links to reference material online help further comprehension. The second edition features new problems and illustrations and features expanded chapters on matrix algebra and differential equations. Use of proven pedagogical techniques developed during the author’s 40 years of teaching experience New practice problems and exercises to enhance comprehension Coverage of fairly advanced topics, including vector and matrix algebra, partial differential equations, special functions and complex variables

In this "provocative" book (New York Times), a contrarian physicist argues that her field's modern obsession with beauty has given us wonderful math but bad science. Whether pondering black holes or predicting discoveries at CERN, physicists believe the best theories are beautiful, natural, and elegant, and this standard separates popular theories from disposable ones. This is why, Sabine Hossenfelder argues, we have not seen a major breakthrough in the foundations of physics for more than four decades. The belief in beauty has become so dogmatic that it now conflicts with scientific objectivity: observation has been unable to confirm mindboggling theories, like supersymmetry or grand unification, invented by physicists based on aesthetic criteria. Worse, these "too good to not be true" theories are actually untestable and they have left the field in a cul-de-sac. To escape, physicists must rethink their methods. Only by embracing reality as it is can science discover the truth.
