This study was undertaken in an attempt to supply a reason for individuals differing in their mode of response to colored objects, especially the colored Rorshach cards. Psychologists have been accepting of this premise without too much regard for the reason why. Color has been regarded as a mysterious affinity. We designed an experiment to test whether discordant or incongruous form and color presents more difficulty than harmonious or congruous form and color when people are faced with the problem of responding to it. The contention was that the effect of color is due to the difficulty in integrating percepts where form and color are inappropriate. Our experiment tested this concept on structured blots and on unstable as well as stable individuals. The thirty subjects were divided into three groups based on the diagnostic categories of normal, neurotic, and psychotic. They were approximately equal on the variables of age, sex, and intelligence. The procedure was carried out by presenting twelve well-known objects, some in their true color, others in a false color, and others in black and white. The reaction time and response made to the object were recorded for each individual in each of the three groups. Three hypotheses were tested: Hypothesis 1. The three groups, normal, neurotic, and psychotic, will differ significantly in response time when presented with harmonious or true color and form and when presented with discordant or false color and form. Hypothesis 2. The number of errors, according to the form level, will increase in the neurotic and psychotic groups as compared to the normal group. Hypothesis 3. There will be a difference in reaction time between the specific false colors red, blue, and green. From our results our first hypothesis was verified. There was significance beyond the .001 level of confidence among the three groups for the reaction time to the false objects minus the reaction time to the true objects. The direction of the results was on a continuum. The normals exhibited little difference in reaction time between the false and true colored objects; the neurotics took much longer on the false colored objects than they did for the true colored objects; and the psychotics took significantly longer than the neurotics for the false colored objects. Our second hypothesis was not verified, but a trend in the predicted direction was present in the psychotic group. Neither was the third hypothesis verified, but again a trend was present that shoed red to take the longest reaction time, then green and blue. The following conclusions were made: 1. Discordant form and color affects the perception of individuals. There is a continuum from normal to neurotic to psychotic. 2. Form-color incongruity may be a tenable explanation for the difficulty that some people experience when responding to color. 3. A secondary result obtained from our color instrument showed marked similarity to some results found on the Rorschach.

Starting from psychophysics, over the last 50 years, most progress in unravelling the mechanisms of color vision has been made through the study of single cell responses, mainly in LGN and striate cortex. A similar development in the study of form perception may seem to be underway, centred on the study of temporal cortex. However, because of the combinatorial characteristics of form perception, we are also observing the opposite tendency: from single-cell activity to population coding, and from static receptive field structures to system dynamics and integration and, ultimately, a synthetic form of psychophysics of color and form perception. From single cells to system integration: it is this development the present Research Topic wishes to highlight and promote. How does this development affect our views on the various attributes of perception? In particular, we are interested in to what extent evolving knowledge in the field of color perception is relevant within a developing integrative framework of form perception. The goal of this Research Topic is to bring together experimental research encompassing both color and form perception. For this volume, we planned a broad scope of topics - on color in complex scenes, color and form, as well as dynamic aspects of form perception. We expect that the Research Topic will be attractive to the community of researchers whose work straddles the boundary between the two visual perception fields, as well as to the wider community interested in integrative/systems neuroscience.

From codevelopers of the Rorschach Performance Assessment System (R-PAS), this essential casebook illustrates the utility of R-PAS for addressing a wide range of common referral questions with adults, children, and adolescents. Compelling case examples from respected experts cover clinical issues (such as assessing psychosis, personality disorders, and suicidality); forensic issues (such as insanity and violence risk assessments, child custody proceedings, and domestic violence); and use in neuropsychological, educational, and other settings. Each tightly edited chapter details R-PAS administration, coding, and interpretation. Designed to replace the widely used Comprehensive System developed by John Exner, R-PAS has a stronger empirical foundation, is accurately normed for international use, is easier to learn and use, and reduces ambiguities in administration and coding, among other improvements. Visit www.r-pas.org for more information or to purchase the R-PAS manual.
