Presentation slides from the year 2017 in the subject Chemistry - Materials Chemistry, grade: 0.9, Srinivas School of Engineering, language: English, abstract: This presentation deals with organic inhibitors on the corrosion of steel and zinc.In the19th century, as the result of technological innovations, revolution in the industry, advancement in the science field, there was a growth in agricultural, industrial production, economic expansion and tremendous changes. People have changed the way of manufacturing processes during this time. All the hand works shifted to the machines. As a result of this revolution, the products were quite cheaper. Mild steel and zinc are very active in the presence of aggressive environment. In the presence of moisture and air, they give respective oxide. It results in the deterioration of metals take place that results in the failures in the industrial equipment in oil industries, gas industries, and water circulating cooling systems. These are main disadvantages of mild steel and zinc. The cause of corrosion of mild steel and zinc and the corrosion control is having critical fundamental, industrial and academic concern .In the existed literature various type of various research groups developed inhibitors. The developed inhibitors, few of them satisfied all the requirements of the industries and society. Even though they are toxic in nature, they aren’t showing inhibition at high temperature. In addition, no one has discussed complete mechanism of corrosion inhibition. In the present study, more attention is given to developing eco-friendly inhibitors. The complete mechanism of inhibition action of these inhibitors were evaluated by using practical and theoretical studies like weight loss, polarization, impedance, activation parameters, thermodynamic parameters. Scanning electron microscope is used to do morphological studies of the inhibitor. The quantum chemical studies are carried out to correlate the theoretical studies with experimental work of corrosion inhibitors. All the results were agreeing with each other. All the developed inhibitors find applications in industries.

Corrosion inhibitors are an important method for minimizing corrosion; however traditional inhibitors such as chromates pose environmental problems. Rare earth metals provide an important, environmentally-friendly alternative. This book provides a comprehensive review of current research and examines how rare earth metals can be used to prevent corrosion and applied to protect metals in such industries as aerospace and construction. Chapter 1 begins by examining the important need to replace chromate, and then goes on to discuss the chemistry of the rare earth metals and their related compounds. Chapter 2 considers the techniques that can be used to identify corrosion inhibition mechanisms and to test the levels of protection offered to different metals by rare earth compounds. Subsequent chapters consider in more detail how rare earth elements can be used as corrosion inhibitors in different forms and for different metals. This includes discussion on the potential of rare earth elements for self-healing, tunable and multifunctional coatings. Finally, chapter 10 considers the cost and availability of the rare earths and the potential health and environmental risks associated with extracting them. Provides a review of current research and examines how rare earth metals can be used to prevent corrosion and applied to protect metals in such industries as aerospace and construction. Includes discussion on the potential of rare earth elements for self-healing, tunable and multifunctional coatings. A book to cover developments in corrosion inhibitors is long overdue. This has been addressed by Dr Sastri in a book which presents fundamental aspects of corrosion inhibition, historical developments and the industrial applications of inhibitors. The book deals with the electrochemical principles and chemical aspects of corrosion inhibition, such as stability of metal complexes, the Hammett equation, hard and soft acid and base principle, quantum chemical aspects and Hansch' s model and also with the various surface analysis techniques, e.g. XPS, Auger, SIMS and Raman spectroscopy, that are used in industry for corrosion inhibition. The applications of corrosion inhibition are wide ranging. Examples given in this book include: oil and gas wells, petrochemical plants, steel reinforced cement, water cooling systems, and many more. The final chapters discuss economic and environmental considerations which are now of prime importance. The book is written for researchers in academia and industry, practicing corrosion engineers and students of materials science, engineering and applied chemistry.

Regarding the vast use of chemical components in different human activities, they are susceptible to corrosion because of contact with aggressive environments. Therefore, the use of inhibitors for the control of corrosion of chemical components in corrosive media is an urgent affair. Numerous investigations were carried out and are still being done to study the corrosion inhibition potential of organic compounds. Remarkable inhibition efficiency was achieved by all these compounds particularly some with N, S, and O atoms in their structure. Unfortunately, most of these compounds are not only expensive but also toxic to living beings. Hence, it is essential to mention the importance of natural inhibitors as eco-friendly, readily available, and renewable sources. The main goal of this book is to point out the influence of these components in terms of physical and, in some cases, chemical, processes on different components in aggressive media. Different methods of measuring corrosion, adsorption behavior, mechanism of inhibitors, and some related information is presented in this book. There is a lack of comprehensive and relevant books on this subject, so we decided to write this book in order to accumulate useful information about the influence of natural inhibitors on metals in corrosive areas and to make it accessible to researchers.
