Excerpt from A Subject-Index to the Poems of Edmund Spenser Since this is not primarily a word-index, but a subject-index, I have not thought it necessary to record all the variations of spelling. The student who is interested in this feature of Spenser's poetry may find what he seeks in the Concordance. For head-words and quota tions I have normalized and modernized the spelling, in general using the index-form preferred by the New English Dictionary. Occasion ally, however, when I have felt that something was to be gained by preserving the exact form of Spenser's language, I have not hesitated to do so from any fear of inconsistency. Words invented by Spenser, for which there is no modern equivalent, are entered under the spelling most commonly used. Frequent cross-references are employed, so that little difficulty should be experienced in locating a word. The allegory of the Faery Queen has proved rather difficult to manage. It has not seemed necessary to identify every character of the poem, as some would do, with one or other of the figures who made the Elizabethan period illustrious. Allegorical interpretations are, however, admitted whenever there seems to be sufficient evidence to support them. Explanations by the compiler, whenever they do not immediately follow the head-word, are enclosed in parentheses. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Excerpt from The Works of Edmund Spenser In the present edition of Edmund Spenser's works no attempt has been made either to modernize the Poet's language or to furnish the reader with an eclectic text. I have been simply content to reprint the earliest known editions of Spenser's various poems, correcting here and there some few errors that have crept into them, by a careful collation with subsequent editions, most of which were published in the lifetime of the poet. For an account of these with their dates of publication the reader is referred to the Biographical Memoir. Appendix I., at the end of this volume, contains all the most important variations from the original editions, and will enable the critical reader to judge favourably or otherwise of this part of my work, in which I have received some assistance from the previous labours of Church, Jortin, Warton, and Todd, as well as from the excellent editions of Professor Child and Mr. J. P. Collier. This present edition is the only modern one that contains a faithful reprint of the first edition of the Daphnaida, by means of which I have been enabled to present a text free at least from one error that appears in every edition after 1591. The prose Treatise on Ireland, as printed by Sir James Ware, and followed by all recent editors, was found on examination to be very inaccurate and incomplete. It seemed scarcely fair to Spenser's memory to let this single piece of prose remain in so unsatisfactory a state. I have therefore re-edited it from three manuscripts belonging to the library of the British Museum. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Complete Works of Edmund Spenser: Edited From the Original Editions and Manuscripts In compiling the Glossary I have endeavoured to make it as comple1 as possible; and this, it is hoped, will in some measure compensate for ti absence of notes, for which no space could he found in the present volume. Have made free use of the labours of previous editors; Todd's Index, Pu feasor Child's Notes, and the glossaries of Mr. J. P. Collier and Mr. Kitclfil have been consulted, and have facilitated and lightened my glossarial work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Spenser, and His Poetry, Vol. 2 These introductions to the several Books of the F airy Queen, we may here observe, have all the appearance of having been written after the poem itself, and inserted, like the Dedicatory Sonnets, by the author when he was preparing it for the press. Excerpt from Poetical Works of Edmund Spenser, Vol. 1 of 3: The Text Carefully Revised and Illustrated With Notes, Original and Selected A new impression of these volumes having, during my absence from the country, advanced more than half-way to completion, I am prevented for the pres ent, from noticing as they deserve, two papers which have been recently put forth on subjects connected with Spenser's biography. The one of these was contributed by Mr. Keightley to Fraser's Magazine, and, contrary to the custom of that author, adds very little to what was previously known. The other ar ticle, which appeared in the Atlantic Monthly for November, 1858, (and which, therefore, is immediately accessible to all who feel an interest in the matter, ) is worthy of special attention. It discusses two of the most curious, if not the most important, questions in the life of Spenser the name and history of his youthful mistress, the enigmatical Rosalind, and of his wife. The discussion of the first of these points has hitherto resulted only in an exposure of the ex treme folly of those writers who have attempted it; but, unless I am greatly deceived, the article now spoken of has most ingeniously resolved the puzzle, and has satisfactorily shown that Rosalind was Rose. Excerpt from The Poetical Works of Edmund Spenser: Edited With Critical Notes OF Spenser's life something may be learned from Official documents and from the writings Of his contemporaries, but the most valuable information is to be found in his poetry. The art of an idealist is in a peculiar sense the expression Of his mind and character, and Of his relation with the world about him and along with this intimate though Often intangible autobiography Spenser has incidentally recorded some details capable Of more definite interpretation. From a sonnet written in 1593, the year Of his courtship, a year which, he tells us, seems longer. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
