What happens when an eccentric captain (who says “Poppycock!” all the time) gets tired of not having any more wars to fight and decides to create his own? It’s a special day in a small village on the hills. It’s the day of the mayor’s daughter wedding, and everyone is ready to celebrate. But suddenly ... A war submarine appears in the central square! Where did it come from?! How did it get there ... without any water?! It'll take a while to understand that the culprit is the eccentric captain who decided to declare war on the small hilltop village. What will this crazy situation lead to? What will happen when the captain (left alone in the depths of the sea for such a long time) starts to acquaint himself with the villagers? A humorous story with a pacifist background about the discovery of ourselves and the world around us. Funny, tender, surreal. A story to make you smile and reflect, talking about friendship, pastries, kisses and smiles. Because another life (… another way) is always possible. For all readers aged 6 to ... 100! (Nobody is too old to dream.) A fairy tale for everyone, with 13 watercolour and pastel illustrations. “He couldn’t actually fish, but he found it quite relaxing to sit there listening to the sound of the water flowing. He had always seen the water from below the surface. What a surprise it was to look at it from above, with the reflection of the sun, the scents in the air and the sounds of the countryside.” Also available in Italian and paperback. Note for the reader: this book is written in British English.

LOST ON AN OCEAN FLOOR The handsome clubroom of the Black Bear Patrol, Boy Scouts of America, in the City of New York, was ablaze with light, and as noisy as healthy, happy boys could well make it. "Over in the Chinese Sea!" shouted Jimmie McGraw from a table which stood by an open window overlooking the brilliantly illuminated city. "Do we go to the washee-washee land this time?" "Only to the tub!" Jack Bosworth put in. "What's the answer?" asked Frank Shaw, sitting down on the edge of the table and rumpling Jimmie's red hair with both hands. Jimmie broke away and, after bouncing a football off his tormentor's back, perched himself on the back of a great easy chair. "The answer?" Jack said, after peace had been in a measure restored, "I thought everybody knew that the Chinks wash their clothes in the Gulf of Tong King and hang them out to dry on the mountains of Kwang Tung! Are we going there, Ned?" he added, turning to Ned Nestor, who sat by a nearby window, looking out over the city. "Are we going to the gulf of Tong King?" Ned left his chair by the window and walked over to the table. "I hardly know," he said, taking a roll of maps and drawings from his breast pocket and spreading them out on the table. "When Captain Moore arrives we shall know more about it." "Who's Captain Moore?" This from Jimmie, still sitting on the back of the chair, elbows on knees, chin on palms.

The ingenious people of the Garden State were instrumental in the early development of the submarine. The first American submarine sank off Fort Lee in 1776, and the first successful one adopted by the U.S. Navy was invented by Paterson's John Holland at the end of the nineteenth century. Those early vessels were tested in the Passaic River and on the Jersey City waterfront. Today, the only surviving Union Civil War submarine, built in Newark, sits in the National Guard Militia Museum in Sea Girt. In 1918, the technology pioneered there was turned against the Jersey Shore when U-151 went on a one-day ship-sinking rampage. A World War II U-boat offensive torpedoed numerous ships off the coast, leaving oil-soaked beaches strewn with wreckage. Authors Joseph G. Bilby and Harry Ziegler reveal the remarkable history of submarines off the New Jersey coastline.

The period covered by this book was one of radical change for the U.S. Navy. When the modern navy first considered buying a submarine in 1887, it was a coast defense force confined to the Western Hemisphere. The United States became a world power just as its new submarines offered a way of defending its most distant possession, the Philippines, without tying down an expensive fleet. World War I found U.S. submarines in an unexpected role, countering German U-boats in British waters. Then the situation changed again with unexpected speed.

From one who served on her legendary decks, the biography of one of the Navy's true masters of the seas, The USS Archerfish. She looked like just about like the other diesel powered, Balao-class submarines crafted in the '40s. But there the similarity ends. Because the Archerfish--named for a fish that kills its victims with a lethal blast of water from below--won a unique, heroic place in military history and the memories of her crew members. Here is her story: from her assembly in New England, her dedication at the hand of Eleanor Roosevelt, her service in World War II, where she broke the back of the Japanese Navy and sank the largest ship ever sunk by a submarine, to the details of her critical role in the Cold War, crisscrossing the oceans for six years to foil Soviet naval intelligence. Here too, is the story of her officers and enlsited men, who waited years to serve on the Archerfish. In their own words, these men tell how, against all odds, they sent a Japanese aircraft carrier to the ocean floor . . . served in peacetime in the Navy's only all bachelor crew . . . steered their ship into exotic ports all over the world . . . welcomed B-girls, Japanese war veterans, royalty, Playboy bunnies and a goat aboard ship, with equal hospitality. As they helped their sub outlast fires and even an earthquake, they worked hard, played hard and lived even harder. An extraordinary real-life odyssey, Gallant Lady is a vivid, unforgettable portrait of submariners' life. This is a beautiful and informative guidebook and history of HMS Alliance. HMS Alliance was laid down at the Vickers Shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness on 13 March 1945. Allied forces had entered Germany and the defeat of Hitler's Third Reich was just weeks away. In the Far East, the war with Japan was at its height. HMS Alliance and the other A Class submarines under construction had been designed for the Pacific in World War Two. Following the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the United States in August 1945, the Japanese surrendered and the war was finally at an end. When HMS Alliance entered service in 1947, Britain was still subject to economic austerity and wartime rationing. The first signs of tension between the Western Allies and the Soviet Union were apparent and the British Empire was beginning to break up. Over the next three decades, Alliance performed many different roles in the post-war Cold War era. She operated all over the world and many hundreds of submariners served in her during the course of her 26 years in commission. In 1958, her familiar appearance as a World War Two-era submarine changed dramatically when she was comprehensively modernised to meet the demands of Cold War submarine operations. Alliance was streamlined and made quieter and faster underwater because her new role included countering the submarines of the Soviet Union. In 1973 Alliance was finally paid off at HMS Dolphin in Gosport, then the home of the Royal Navy Submarine Service. For a few years Alliance served as a static training submarine, but in 1979 the Navy embarked on the ambitious task of preserving Alliance as the last surviving submarine from World War Two. In 1982, HMS Alliance went on display to the public for the first time as an historic ship, and also as a memorial to more than 5,300 submariners who had given their lives serving in Royal Navy submarines.

"Like Serenity on a submarine..." The surface of the ocean has become a contested place. International shipping is forced undersea, carried out by submarines fitted for transporting cargo. Captain Sylvia Percy and her small crew run one such boat, the Prospect. They fight a daily battle to keep their rusting sub from dropping into the depths. It's just another grimy job until they find themselves pursued by a military submarine driven by some inexplicable violent purpose. To survive, the crew of the Prospect push the machine that is their home to the very edge of its capabilities, while still trying to make their delivery on time. Try a spoonful of realism mixed into your speculative fiction. By Sound Alone is derived from science fiction themes but never deviates from a commitment to painstakingly-researched, realistic mid-century submarine mechanics and operations. With a heritage that is equal parts 1970s trucker culture and 1960s submarine movie, By Sound Alone revels in the power of confined spaces and dangerous operations that have always been the meat of compelling submarine stories. But it also breaks new ground with a setting of a fictional world where cargo submarines are a critical part of global logistics networks. It's a gripping grimepunk tale, propelled through a cinematic environment from which you will not want to surface.
