There is only one kind of electricity, no matter how gen crated, but its actions vary widely according to the current and instrument used in employing. It. Investigators have demonstrated that both animal and veg etable life are due to and dependent upon electric conditions and it is more than likely that the organs of active nutrition give rise to electric currents. It is also true that animal organs and tissues are modified and influenced by electricity. There are many reasons why the work of the nervous system should be compared with the complex workings of an electrical battery. In health the nerves are all in a state of vibration, due in all probability to the electrical currents which traverse the body in every direction. Excerpt from The Principles of Electrotherapy: And Their Practical Application This book is the outcome of an attempt to explain the therapeutic action of electricity upon rational grounds and upon physiological principles. In Part I current electricity is discussed. The thera peutie action of static electricity is here considered, because it is mainly the currents derived from the static machine, and not the static charge itself, which possess therapeutic action. The static machine serves to generate a static charge, which, when sufficient voltage has been attained, discharges as a current of very low intensity, but of very high potential, and so affords methods of therapy unattainable by other means. The necessity of clearly distinguishing between the polar and inter-polar action of the constant current is pointed out. The action of interrupted currents of low frequency is shown to be due to the relatively high velocity of the hydrogen ion compared to the velocities of the other ions in the tissues. Over forty years ago, 'whilst a student at school, electricity had a peculiar charm for 'me. The chemistry, then in use, gave a good description, illustrated by plates, of the machinery in use, and as a text-book was all that was necessary to teach the elementary part of this subject. In particular it illustrated electrical induction. Later, when a student of medicine, I learned what was then known of the electro-magnetic machine, and of the mag neto-electric machine. These machines gave only the induced current. At this time I only learned that there was an induced current in use; this is What is'now called the secondary induced current. Of 'this information I was quite proud and rather set myself up as a critic or a teacher. Some years ago an artisan, near my office, made a machine for winding silk or cotton around a wire for the purpose of insulating it and in order to show how well this work was done he made from this wire so insulated the necessary coils for an electro-magnetic machine.
