""A System of Logic, Ratiocinative and Inductive"" is a seminal work by the British philosopher John Stuart Mill, originally published in 1843. The seventh edition, Volume II, continues Mill's comprehensive exploration of the principles and methods of reasoning. Building upon the groundwork laid in Volume I, Mill delves deeper into the application of logic to empirical inquiry and scientific investigation. He elucidates the principles of inductive reasoning, which form the basis of scientific method, and provides detailed analyses of various forms of induction and their validity. Additionally, Mill examines the relationship between logic and psychology, discussing the processes of thought and mental operations involved in reasoning. Through rigorous analysis and systematic exposition, ""A System of Logic"" Volume II remains a foundational text in the fields of logic, philosophy, and scientific inquiry, offering invaluable insights into the nature of knowledge, inference, and rational inquiry.

George Grote's "History of Greece" (Volumes 1-12) is a monumental scholarly work that chronicles the political, cultural, and social evolution of Greece from its earliest days to the decline of classical civilization. Grote blends rigorous historical analysis with a narrative style that vividly reconstructs significant events and figures, imbuing the text with both scholarly precision and literary elegance. Addressing themes such as democracy, culture, and imperialism, Grote situates ancient Greek history within the broader scope of Western civilization, making his work not only a history of a nation but also a foundation for understanding the political ideologies that would shape modern democracies. Born into a prosperous family in England, Grote's exposure to the classics and philology shaped his intellectual pursuits. His extensive travels throughout Greece, coupled with his engagement in the Whig political movement, informed his belief in democracy and liberal thought, which resonate throughout his historical examination. His commitment to accessibility in scholarly works reflects his desire to democratize knowledge and place history within the grasp of the broader public. "History of Greece" is essential for scholars, students, and general readers alike, providing a comprehensive insight into the complexities of Greco-Roman culture and its enduring influence on contemporary society. Esteemed not only for its academic rigor but also for its compelling storytelling, Grote'Äôs history offers an indispensable lens through which to explore the foundations of modern civilization.

Arthur Spiethoff (1873–1957), an economist of the German Historical School of Economics, is best known for his theory of the business cycle. Despite Spiethoff calling for a unified reading of his work, his epistemological thinking has received less attention. This book addresses that gap by analysing Spiethoff’s theory of the business cycle in the light of his epistemological views. Putting Spiethoff’s work in context, the book also investigates the most significant features of the evolution of the “research programme” of the German Historical School of Economics, with particular reference to the relationships between Schmoller, Sombart, Weber and Spiethoff. In addition, Spiethoff’s work is compared with some of the scientific orientations of the current debates: on the epistemological side, the book examines the relationship between Spiethoff’s views and some contemporary thinking on scientific realism, as well as methodological pluralism in social sciences. And, more broadly, it emphasises the analytical relevance of the historical approach in explaining the economic imbalances of contemporary capitalism, questioning the idea, widespread in the neoclassical approach, that taking historical specificities into account makes it hard to achieve a theoretically effective attitude. This book is a significant addition to the literature on the German Historical School of Economics and the history of economic thought, business cycle theory and macroeconomics more broadly.
