Not illustrated. 1894 edition. Excerpt: ... chapter xx. As the summer wore on Rogasner's mind ran principally on his love affair. Ho gave very little attention to the banking business. The bank served as a blind to mask his real designs in Washington. It came natural in the family of which he was a descendent to be a banker, and to so organize and set the checks and balances as to make this business run with success. J He gave very little of his time to it, nd though thei president, his name did not appear on the letter heads. The bank had no foreign connections; doing all of its outside business through the New York Dank of which his brother Edward was in charge. Everything was avoided that would draw attention to or disclose the identity of Victor Rogasner, and nothing had yet occurred to embarrass him in his operations, the success of which, aside from his love affair, was his sole ambition and the cause of his being in the United States. His plans in this respect were all meeting with success, and public sentiment had been moulded until it was scarcely necessary to do much more than had been done to hold the authorities at Washington to the. opinion that silver should not be rehabilitated. And yet he was sleepless in his energy. The bankers and money lenders in the United States had become his allies and were exerting a powerful influence, but there were many things they did not think of, and while keeping himself informed as to their work, he was constantly doing something to mould public sentiment or otherwise strengthen his position. About the time of the investment of English capital in the breweries of this country, he had caused the purchase, through agents sent direct by Baron Rothe to the United States, of a majority of the stock of several metropolitan newspapers, ..

In this critical discussion of the debates surrounding Margaret Thatcher, the first part presents a general review of the account of Thatcherism developed by academics and economic and political analysts from the mid-70s, and part two situates and reproduces a debate on the subject between Stuart Hall and the authors. In the third part the authors relate the issues raised by competing accounts of Thatcherism to some of the key theoretical and methodological problems in current social and political analysis such as - structure and agency, state-centred versus society-centred approaches to politics, the relative autonomy of the political, the role of class interests and social movements.

In our 24/7 news cycle, it is difficult to imagine a time when news reports were often days old, when stories weren't necessarily confirmed and when colorful language permeated articles. During World War 1, that's exactly how newspapers in Canada and the United States reported events locally and aboard.A Tale of Two Nations focuses on the start of the war and key events from 1915-1918. It examines events not through the lens of hindsight and analysis but as they occurred. In A Tale of Two Nations, you'll read about: -1914: War begins in Europe-1915: The Second Battle of Ypres and sinking of the Lusitania-1916: The Battle of the Somme and the U.S. presidential election-1917: The Battle of Vimy Ridge and the United States enters the war-1918: The war ends and the Spanish Flu Pandemic

New York Times Bestseller New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice "An essential and groundbreaking text in the effort to understand how American criminal justice went so badly awry." —Ta-Nehisi Coates, author of Between the World and Me In A Colony in a Nation, New York Times best-selling author and Emmy Award–winning news anchor Chris Hayes upends the national conversation on policing and democracy. Drawing on wide-ranging historical, social, and political analysis, as well as deeply personal experiences with law enforcement, Hayes contends that our country has fractured in two: the Colony and the Nation. In the Nation, the law is venerated. In the Colony, fear and order undermine civil rights. With great empathy, Hayes seeks to understand this systemic divide, examining its ties to racial inequality, the omnipresent threat of guns, and the dangerous and unfortunate results of choices made by fear.

Two Nations In Your Womb written by Israel Jacob Yuval and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-08-19 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Since it was first published in Hebrew in 2000, this provocative book has been garnering acclaim and stirring controversy for its bold reinterpretation of the relationship between Judaism and Christianity in the Middle Ages, especially in medieval Europe. Looking at a remarkably wide array of source material, Israel Jacob Yuval argues that the inter-religious polemic between Judaism and Christianity served as a substantial component in the mutual formation of each of the two religions. He investigates ancient Jewish Passover rituals; Jewish martyrs in the Rhineland who in 1096 killed their own children; Christian perceptions of those ritual killings; and events of the year 1240, when Jews in northern France and Germany expected the Messiah to arrive. Looking below the surface of these key moments, Yuval finds that, among other things, the impact of Christianity on Talmudic and medieval Judaism was much stronger than previously assumed and that a "rejection of Christianity" became a focal point of early Jewish identity. Two Nations in Your Womb will reshape our understanding of Jewish and Christian life in late antiquity and over the centuries.
