Excerpt from A Text-Book of Logic It seems, therefore, that for some time to come logic will continue, in the main, to be traditional, and that books of logic will have to conform to the requirements that are determined by that fact. But there are all sorts and degrees of conformity, and I confess to a liking for that kind and degree which is not inconsistent with the exercise of the largest liberty of one's academic conscience. It would not be surprising, consequently, if it were discovered that I had allowed the present situation in: logic to sit lightly upon me, and that, where it seemed desirable, I had departed in method and doc trine from traditional views. It is I believe in some such way as this, rather than in assuming a critical, not to say captious, attitude toward the whole of traditional logic that the best interests both of the subject and of those who study it can be advanced. Excerpt from A Short History of Logic With the author's manuscript and printed copy before me, my own work as editor has consisted chiefly in selecting the material and seeing it through the press. Some omitted references have been sup plied; a few slips of the pen or the press, formerly overlooked, have been corrected; unwieldy paragraphs have been broken up, and the punctuation has been simplified; but nothing new has been added to text or notes. I am responsible for the choice of a title. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Elements of Logic: A d104-Book for Schools and Colleges; The Elementary Lessons in Logic Except in a few places, where special notice is given, I have abstained from putting forward any views not commonly accepted by teachers of logic; and I have throughout devoted more attention to describing clearly and simply the doctrines in which logicians generally agree, than discussing the points in which there is a difference of opinion. The recent logical discoveries of Sir W. Hamilton, Archbishop Thomson, Prof. De Morgan, and especially the late Prof. Boole, cannot yet be fully adopted in an ele mentary work, but I have attempted to give a clear notion of the results to which they inevitably lead. Excerpt from Lessons in Logic The chief need of the teacher of logic in our high-schools and colleges is a text-book which will meet the peculiar requirements of the class room. Many of the text-books now in use are written by men whose theory of the nature and value of knowledge, influenced as it is by false philosophical principles, is distrusted by the teacher who uses the books, and is not unlikely to upset the minds of the pupils. Others, while written on the soundest philosophical princi ples, take little or no account of pedagogical methods, and present the theory of logic with out sufficient regard for the difficulties which beset beginners in this study. Excerpt from An Introductory Logic The present\edition represents a somewhat thorough revision of this book, which had remained substantially unchanged since its first publication, eleven years ago. Changes of more or less importance have been introduced into every chapter; new paragraphs have been added to many of the sections; and, especially in the Second Part, many of the sections have been entirely rewritten. Chap ter XIII. Of the old text, on the Problem of Induction, has been expanded into two chapters; and, throughout this Part, an attempt has been made to bring the treatment of the various inductive methods into closer relation with a general philosophical theory. The chapter with which the text formerly closed, Rational and Empirical Theories, has been replaced by one entitled The Unification of Knowledge. It has seemed important to conclude the discussion of the nature of thought with some statement of the meaning and function of the main categories which experience involves, and, in this connection, to Indicate in a general way the necessity of a philosophical interpreta tion of the results of the special sciences. The number of problems and examples of reasoning to be analyzed has been more than doubled in the belief that fresh material of this nature will prove welcome to teachers of the subject.
