Excerpt from A Text-Book of Logic It seems, therefore, that for some time to come logic will continue, in the main, to be traditional, and that books of logic will have to conform to the requirements that are determined by that fact. But there are all sorts and degrees of conformity, and I confess to a liking for that kind and degree which is not inconsistent with the exercise of the largest liberty of one's academic conscience. It would not be surprising, consequently, if it were discovered that I had allowed the present situation in: logic to sit lightly upon me, and that, where it seemed desirable, I had departed in method and doc trine from traditional views. It is I believe in some such way as this, rather than in assuming a critical, not to say captious, attitude toward the whole of traditional logic that the best interests both of the subject and of those who study it can be advanced. Excerpt from A Text-Book of Logic The time has not arrived when it is possible or desirable to write a text-book of logic for elementary students which departs very considerably from the course that has been defined by university requirements in various parts of the world. Both in Europe and in America instruction in this subject has to a large extent been controlled by what may be called the classical tradition of which Aristotle and Mill are the two fountain heads. In some quarters this fact has operated as a hardship, and has led to open, if rather one-sided, criticism of the subject's educational usefulness, on the one hand, and has directed attention to and aroused interest in the real and supposed defects of the traditional logical doctrine, on the other. The position both of those who maintain the conservative attitude, and of those who would substitute for the old some new kind of logic, is capable of defence up to a certain point, and there is no doubt that the stirring of the academic waters on this subject will result at some time in a larger freedom in the choice of the material and methods of logical instruction, and to that extent will reduce the possibility of attributing to the subject the imperfections of temper and understanding of those who teach it. Textbook Of Logic written by Wolf Abraham and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-06-04 with Business & Economics categories.

Originally published in 1930, this well-known text by the late British philosopher Abraham Wolf offers the student a practical, consistent, and comprehensive approach to logic which remains unique in its field. Dr. Wolf here deals systematically with the two main types of reasoning - formal logic and inductive logic - and their various applications. All the main elements of logic - such as inference, syllogism, dilemmas, evidence, deductive and inductive methods, and probability - are subsumed under these general headings. Professor Wolf strongly emphasizes the fact that logic cannot be mastered without some practical application; at the end of this volume, therefore, he includes a section of exercises based on each chapter. His unusally interesting appendix examines such matters as symbolic as logic, fallacies, the law of contradiction, modal propositions, the existential import of categorical propositions, predictables, and categories.

Excerpt from The Elements of Logic: A d104-Book for Schools and Colleges; The Elementary Lessons in Logic Except in a few places, where special notice is given, I have abstained from putting forward any views not commonly accepted by teachers of logic; and I have throughout devoted more attention to describing clearly and simply the doctrines in which logicians generally agree, than discussing the points in which there is a difference of opinion. The recent logical discoveries of Sir W. Hamilton, Archbishop Thomson, Prof. De Morgan, and especially the late Prof. Boole, cannot yet be fully adopted in an ele mentary work, but I have attempted to give a clear notion of the results to which they inevitably lead. Excerpt from An Introductory Text-Book of Logic In the present volume the author's aim has been to provide a text-book at once elementary and philosophical. More specifically, he has endeavoured, in the first place, to give an accurate exposition of the essentials of "the Traditional Logic"; in the second place, to connect the traditional doctrine with its Aristotelian fountainhead, - not only because of the value and clearness of Aristotle's own treatment (as compared with later accretions), but in order to make various doctrines and phrases intelligible, which in the ordinary text-book are simply "shot from a pistol" as it were; in the third place, to show the open door leading from the traditional doctrine into the more modern and more strictly philosophical treatment of the subject. The book is intended to stop short of giving what is supplied in Mr Bosanquet's Essentials of Logic (not to mention larger works), but to lead on naturally to that and to a serious study of "Modern Logic."
