Excerpt from A Theory of Wit and Humour In describing this book as a work on wit and humour, I have employed the words in the com mon acceptation and in their most comprehensive sense; using the term wit to describe all those ideas to which the word may with any propriety be applied, including what is known as bad and indifferent wit, and humour as applying to all risible ideas whatsoever, some of which would be universally accepted as humour, some whose title to the name, while more or less valid, is less unquestioned, while the remainder usually pass by such names as ludicrousness, incongruity, grotesqueness, buffoonery. Further, my theory, as will be seen, presents a certain extension of the province of the risible as ordinarily under stood. This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1890 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER V. ON INGENUITY IN GENERAL, AND CIRCUMSTANTIAL NOVELTY. The ingenuity with which a theory of wit and humour is concerned relates, with a few such exceptions as mother wit and various other ideas of practical value, to phases mainly interesting the intellectual sense of persons in general. As stated in the synopsis in Chapter II., which I recapitulate in various particulars, it comprises three species. The first, which will be designated throughout the book by the term, ingenuity of the first species, is the discovery, by special search, of various ideas, to be enumerated in detail later on, and of which a general description has been given in the synopsis. The second species, which may be otherwise designated as conscious invention (a term appropriate because the like phases to those discovered by this species of ingenuity are often produced in unconsciousness of their risible nature), is the discovery, by special search, of risible phases, with or without circumstantial novelty No. 1 (circumstantial novelty from the presence of an excuse for imperfection) for jocular exhibition in one's self, or for ascription to fictitious personages, as in novels, or fictitiously, to existing persons. It is often convenient (as giving a certain excuse for the joke) when presenting a phase of circumstantial novelty No. 2 opposed to common sense, to profess belief in the full propriety--the conformity with common sense--of such presentation. This profession, when it is an ostensible mental inferiority and not a nominal falsehood, * would be a phase of conscious invention, though of course one of a fixed and uniform character, and wholly without interest in itself. The third species is the discovery, by special search, of phases, risible or..

Humor, wit, and laughter surround each person. From everyday quips to the carefully contrived comedy of literature, newspapers, and television we experience humor in many forms, yet the impetus for our laughter is far from innocuous. Misfortune, stupidity, and moral or cultural defects, however faintly revealed in others and ourselves, seem to make us laugh. Although discomforting, such negative terms as superiority, aggression, hostility, ridicule, or degradation can be applied to instances of humor. According to scholars, Thomas Hobbes's "superiority theory"—that humor arises from mischances, infirmities, and indecencies, where there is no wit at all—applies to most humor. With the exception of good-natured play, Charles R. Gruner claims that humor is rarely as innocent as it first appears. Gruner's proposed superiority theory of humor is all-encompassing. In The Game of Humor, he expands the scope of Hobbes's theory to include and explore the contest aspect of "good-natured" play. As such, the author believes all instances of humor can be examined as games, in terms of competition and keeping score—winners and losers. Gruner draws on a broad spectrum of thought-provoking examples. Holocaust jokes, sexual humor, the racialist dialogue of such comic characters as Stepin Fetchit and Archie Bunker, simple puns, and many of the author's own encounters with everyday humor. Gruner challenges the reader to offer a single example of humor that cannot be "de-humorized" by its agonistic nature. The Game of Humor makes intriguing and enjoyable reading for people interested in humor and the aspects of human motivation. This book will also be valuable to professionals in communication and information studies, sociologists, literary critics and linguists, and psychologists concerned with the conflicts and tensions of everyday life.

Humor and laughter play a vital part in our everyday social encounters. This book is concerned with the exploration of the psychology of humor and laughter by the foremost professional researchers in these areas. It examines the major theoretical perspectives underlying current approaches and it draws together for the first time the main empirical work done over the course of this century. Peter Berks brings this story up to the moment. The two major parts of the book deal with perception of and responses to humor, and its uses in society at large. The chapters themselves range from cognitive aspects of humor development, through the functions of humor and laughter in social interaction, to the use of humor by comedians and by the mass media. One of the general features of the volume is the concern with the variety of techniques and research methods which are used in studies aimed at understanding our responsiveness to humor and the contexts in which we create it.Humor and Laughter contains chapters by psychologists with longstanding research interests in humor and laughter, including Thomas R. Shultz, Mary K. Rothbart, Goran Nerhardt, Michael Godkewitsch, Walter E. O'Connell, and Harvey Mindess. Humor and Laughter presents wide-ranging theoretical, methodological, and empirical perspectives on an important area of human behavior and social interaction. This book should interest many behavioral scientists and practitioners, particularly those in social and clinical psychology, psychiatry, child psychology and education, sociology, and related disciplines.

The Soul Of Wit written by Carl Dale Hill and has been published by U of Nebraska Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1993-01-01 with Literary Criticism categories.

Witz can serve either builders or destroyers, defenders of the faith or heretics, diplomats or oafs, male chauvinists or radical feminists. Witz shows its volatility in setting up cultural, class, and gender boundaries just to smash them. Hill argues that there is something about Witz that makes it quintessential to the plight of modern culture. He views Witz as an ahistorical subject developing over time and transcending the lifespans and intentions of the authors who have written with or about it.
