Biota akuatik (air) umumnya merupakan bahanpangan bergizi tinggi. Manusia yang hidup di sekitarsungai, danau, dan laut selalu menangkap danmemungut berbagai biota akuatik untuk dikonsumsi, baik dalam keadaan mentah maupun dimasak. Bukan suatu kebetulan bila peradaban-peradaban besar tumbuh di daerah-daerah tepian sungai dan laut, seperti Sungai Nil, Gangga, Mekong, serta daerah pesisir pantai Yunani dan Italia. Biota akuatik mengandung protein, lemak, vitamin, karbohidrat, selenium, kalsium, magnesium, dan lain-lain. Rata-rata biota akuatik mengandung 20% protein dan kandungan lemak omega-3 yang sangat bermanfaat bagi kesehatan manusia. Berbagai bahan bioaktif yang terkandung dalam biota akuatik memiliki potensi yang sangat besar bagi penyediaan pangan, bahan baku kosmetik, dan farmasi. Selama init penggunaan biota akuatik masih mengandalkan kemurahan alam sehingga beberapa spesies, seperti kuda laut, teripang, dan kayu pedada dalam kondisi terancam karena penangkapan yang berlebihan, serta rusaknya habitat dan ekosistem. Potensi produksi akuakultur atau budi daya perairan Indonesia diperkirakan mencapai 57,7 juta ton/tahun. Tahun 2016 produksi akuakultur Indonesia baru mencapi 19,4 juta ton. Angka tersebut masih sangat rendah. Apalagi produksi akuakultur Indonesia didominasi oleh rumput laut, yang mencapai 57%. Dari sisi produktivitas, petani ikan atau pembudidaya di Indonesia masih rendah. Produktivitas pembudidaya Indonesia baru mencapai 5,52 ton/orang/tahun, sedangkan pembudidaya Tiongkok (Republik Rakyat Tiongkok) telah mencapai 10,83 ton/orang/tahun. Sementara produktivitas pembudidaya di negara-negara Eropa telah mencapai 27,8 ton/orang/tahun, pembudidaya di negara-negara Oceania sebesar 32,7 ton/orang/tahun, dan pembudidaya di negara-negara Amerika Utara sudah mencapai 59,3 ton/orang/tahun. Peningkatan produktivitas petani ikan atau pembudidaya akan berdampak langsung pada peningkatan produksi akuakultur. Penyediaan informasi mengenai teknologi budi daya komoditas perikanan laut adalah bagian dari peningkatan produktivitas petani ikan untuk peningkatan produksi akuakultur. Sebanyak 39 komoditas perikanan laut disajikan di dalam buku ini, meliputi pasar, biologi, pembenihan, pendederan, dan pembesaran. Gabus adalah ikan air tawar yang sejak lama dikenal sebagai ikan konsumsi yang cukup penting. Selain menjadi ikan konsumsi, ikan gabus juga dikenal sebagai ikan hias. Di samping itu, ikan gabus juga dapat diolah menjadi obat dan makanan kesehatan. Karena itu, ikan gabus yang dulunya dikenal sebagai ikan menjijikkan karena tampilannya yang mirip ular dan hidup di rawa-rawa atau saluran air ini "naik kelas " menjadi ikan ekonomis. Di Sumatera Selatan, selain merupakan ikan konsumsi langsung yang penting, ikan gabus juga digunakan sebagai bahan baku pembuatan pempek. Ikan gabus mempunyai ciri khusus, yaitu dapat dengan mudah bercampur dengan tepung sagu dan tidak berminyak. Ikan gabus memiliki kandungan protein dan albumin yang tinggi, yaitu 70% protein dan 21% albumin. Ikan gabus juga mengandung asam amino yang lengkap, serta mikronutrien zink, selenium, dan iron. Kandungan lain dalam ikan gabus adalah alisin, alil sulfida, dan furostanol glikosida. Semua kandungan tersebut membuat ikan gabus cocok dikonsumsi oleh pasien luka bakar, pasien pasca operasi, atau orang yang dalam masa penyembuhan, orang tua yang fungsi organnya mulai menurun, maupun anak-anak yang mengalami malnutrisi.Oleh karena itu, ikan gabus menjadi ikan ekonomis yang sangat prospektif.

Bobara menjadi hidangan favorit dari rumah makan di pinggir jalan hingga rumah makan mewah, restoran, dan hotelhotel berbintang yang dihidangkan sebagai ikan bakar dan ikan goreng mulai dari ukuran kecil, dari 300 g/ekor hingga ikan-ikan yang mencapai ukuran besar, dari 2 kg/ekor hingga > 10 kg/ekor. Sebagai ikan laut bernilai ekonomis tinggi dan dapat dibudidayakan, bobara menjadi salah satu ikan yang sangat prospektif. Sebagai ikan budi daya, bobara tergolong ikan yang pertumbuhannya relatif cepat dan mudah dipelihara. Babara biru (Caranx melampygus) dan bobara putih (C. sexfasciatus) adalah jenis yang memiliki laju pertumbuhan tercepat.
