Potensi produksi akuakultur atau budi daya perairan Indonesia diperkirakan mencapai 57,7 juta ton/tahun. Tahun 2016 produksi akuakultur Indonesia baru mencapi 19,4 juta ton. Angka tersebut masih sangat rendah. Apalagi produksi akuakultur Indonesia didominasi oleh rumput laut, yang mencapai 57%. Dari sisi produktivitas, petani ikan atau pembudidaya di Indonesia masih rendah. Produktivitas pembudidaya Indonesia baru mencapai 5,52 ton/orang/tahun, sedangkan pembudidaya Tiongkok (Republik Rakyat Tiongkok) telah mencapai 10,83 ton/orang/tahun. Sementara produktivitas pembudidaya di negara-negara Eropa telah mencapai 27,8 ton/orang/tahun, pembudidaya di negara-negara Oceania sebesar 32,7 ton/orang/tahun, dan pembudidaya di negara-negara Amerika Utara sudah mencapai 59,3 ton/orang/tahun. Peningkatan produktivitas petani ikan atau pembudidaya akan berdampak langsung pada peningkatan produksi akuakultur. Penyediaan informasi mengenai teknologi budi daya komoditas perikanan laut adalah bagian dari peningkatan produktivitas petani ikan untuk peningkatan produksi akuakultur. Sebanyak 39 komoditas perikanan laut disajikan di dalam buku ini, meliputi pasar, biologi, pembenihan, pendederan, dan pembesaran. Komoditas dimaksud adalah abalon, badut, bandeng, bakau, bawal bintang, beronang, bobara, karang, kakap putih, kakap mata kucing, kakap jenaha, kakap merah, kakap tambak, kepiting bakau, kerang hijau, kerapu batik, kerapu bebek, kerapu cantang, kerapu cantik, kerapu kertang, kerapu lumpur, kerapu macan, kerapu sunu, kima, kobia, kuda laut, lobster, napoleon, penyu, rajungan, rumput laut, sotong, teripang, tiram bakau, tiram mutiara, tuna, udang windu, udang vanname, dan lambouh.(***)

Biologi Perikanan adalah salah satu cabang dari biologi yang fokus pada ikan sejak ikan menetas, kemudian mulai makan, tumbuh, beraktivitas, bereproduksi, dan akhirnya mengalami kematian, baik kematian secara alami maupun faktor-faktor lain. Biologi Perikanan merupakan ilmu yang mengkhususkan kajian pada strukturorganisme ikan (morfologi), struktur tubuh ikan (anatomi), faktor kimia dan fisika pada ikan (fisiologi), dan proses serta kebiasaan hidupnya. Karena itu, Biologi Perikanan merupakan ilmu dasar untuk mendalami dinamika populasi ikan, pengembangan spesies untuk dikelola menjadi ikan akuakultur, dan upaya konservasi spesies ikan yang terancam mengalami kepunahan. Tujuan mempelajari Biologi Perikanan adalah agar dapat memahami sumber daya perikanan serta pemanfaatannya secara optimum dan berkelanjutan. Aplikasi Biologi Perikanan adalah sebagai alat pengelola sumber daya perikanan, di mana pengelolaan perikanan itu berhubungan dengan sumber daya dan masyarakat. Hasil akhirnya adalah optimalisasi pemanfaatan sumber daya perikanan secara berkelanjutan, sedangkan bagi masyarakat dan pemerintah adalah kesejahteraan, ketersediaan sumber protein yang dapat dijangkau, dan devisa. Biologi Perikanan diperlukan untuk melengkapi arahan dalam pengelolaan sumber daya perikanan. Rekomendasi ahli Biologi Perikanan diperlukan untuk pengambilan kebijakan yang berhubungan dengan pemanfaatan sumber daya perikanan dan konservasi. Ruang lingkup Biologi Perikanan meliputi 2 cabang kajian yang saling terkait. Cabang pertama adalah kajian mengenai Natural History, yaitu tentang keadaan biologi ikan dalam suatu perairan yang meliputi daur hidup ikan, seperti: (a) induk ikan; (b) keadaan induk pada waktu akan memijah; (c) bagaimana keadaan memijahnya; (d) bagaimana keturunan yang dihasilkan; dan (e) pertumbuhan dan cara makannya sampai mati. Cabang kedua adalah kajian mengenai Dinamika dari Populasi, yaitu: bagaimana kecepatan dan hasil reproduksi serta pengaruhnya terhadap populasi, kecepatan pertumbuhan, sebab-sebab dan kecepatan kematian, serta pengaruhnya terhadap populasi. Dengan demikian dalam memperlajari Biologi Perikanan akan dipelajari hal-hal berikut: (a) seksualitas ikan; (b) tingkat kematangan gonad; (c) fekunditas; (d) ruaya; (e) pemijahan; (f) awal daur hidup ikan; (g) pertumbuhan ikan; (h) kebiasaan makan dan cara makan; (i) persaingan dan pemangsaan; dan (j) umur ikan
