Excerpt from A Treatise on the Theory of Functions The complex number is constructed out of two elements, each of which is capable of assuming a singly infinite series of values; this is the reason that it needs for its representation a doubly infinite series of points. The plane is chosen as the field on which these points are to lie; and the figure formed by representing points in this way is referred to as Argand's diagram. Other representations are possible; as, for instance, on a Sphere. We shall have occasion to establish a (1, 1) correspondence between the points of a Sphere and the doubly infinite series of values Of z, and thus to use the Sphere as the field on which z is represented. This book is an elementary introduction to non-classical spectral theory. Mter the basic definitions and a reduction to the study of the functional model the discussion will be centered around the simplest variant of such a model which, formally speaking, comprises only the class of contraction operators with a one dimensional rank of non-unitarity (rank(I - T*T) = rank(I - TT*) = 1). The main emphasis is on the technical side of the subject, the book being mostly devoted to a development of the analytical machinery of spectral theory rather than to this discipline itself. The functional model of Sz. -Nagy and Foia§ re duces the study of general operators to an investigation of the . compression T=PSIK of the shift operator S, Sf = zf, onto coinvariant subspaces (i. e. subspaces in variant with respect to the adjoint shift S*). In the main body of the book (the "Lectures" in the proper meaning of the word) this operator acts on the Hardy space H2 and is itself a part of the operator of multiplication by the independent variable in the space L2 (in the case at hand L2 means L2(lf), If being the unit circle), this operator again being fundamental for classical spectral theory.

This book is the first comprehensive treatise of the transcendence theory of Mahler functions and their values. Recently the theory has seen profound development and has found a diversity of applications. The book assumes a background in elementary field theory, p-adic field, algebraic function field of one variable and rudiments of ring theory. The book is intended for both graduate students and researchers who are interested in transcendence theory. It will lay the foundations of the theory of Mahler functions and provide a source of further research.

The subject of this book is the theory of special functions, not considered as a list of functions exhibiting a certain range of properties, but based on the unified study of singularities of second-order ordinary differential equations in the complex domain. The number and characteristics of the singularities serve as a basis for classification of each individual special function. Links between linear special functions (as solutions of linear second-order equations), and non-linear special functions (as solutions of Painlevé equations) are presented as a basic and new result. Many applications to different areas of physics are shown and discussed. The book is written from a practical point of view and will address all those scientists whose work involves applications of mathematical methods. Lecturers, graduate students and researchers will find this a valuable text and reference work.
