Excerpt from A Treatise, the Stability of Ships The Author has been induced to prepare this work by many considerations. In the first place, no general work upon the Stability of Ships exists, so far as he is aware, in our language, although several authors have treated the subject satisfactorily as parts of more comprehensive works. In the next place, both the science and the practice of the subject have recently undergone great developments, at home and abroad, the results being scattered over many and various publications; and it was undoubtedly desirable to bring them together, and place them into due relation to each other. Again, during the present, as during the last century, French investigators have taken a leading part in the extension of this branch of science, and it is essential to the sound education of English naval architects and others, that the results of their labours should be brought within easy reach. Finally, the number of persons who now are required, by their professional avocations in connection with ships, to obtain some knowledge of the doctrines of stability is so great, that this work may fairly be taken as a response, and a somewhat tardy response, to a demand which has long been felt for collected information on the subject, and which, during the last year, has become widespread and urgent. Excerpt from Naval Architecture: A Treatise on Laying Off and Building Wood, Iron, and Composite Ships It is believed that this volume will be found to contain nearly all the problems in Laying Ofi' which occur in actual practice on the mould loft floor; and, in addition thereto, a number of problems which, while not met with in practice, are yet valuable as exercises to strengthen the student's knowledge of the subject, and are often set in examinations to test that knowledge. I am indebted to Mr. G. Crocker, of Devonport yard, for assistance in preparing Chapter VII., which is devoted entirely to the consideration of a difficult class of these problems. Mr. J. Logan of Chatham yard has also kindly assisted me in the preparation of Chapter X., which treats of Laying Ofi' iron ships of war. In endeavouring to discuss the details of shipbuilding within the limits of this work, want of space has rendered it necessary to consider only the operations carried out on the building slip, prior to launching. A Naval Officer of fair mathematical ability, can readily make himself familiar with all the essential principles governing the design of a ship, as well as the mode of making the calculations; though to become a Naval Constructor may need the apprenticeship of the "mould loft" and ship yard. In fact, there is no more mystery about the subject of Naval Construction than there is about the subject of Steam Enginery, and any intelligent officer may easily make himself perfectly conversant with both, while the importance of acquiring such knowledge, is self evident. In accordance with these views, the first portion of the work, entitled "Naval Architecture," has been put together for the use of the Students at the U. S. Naval Academy.
