Feeling that this was a grand opportunity for a skilful pen upon an interesting subject, and that the requisite talent for the purpose was not lacking in our party, I was reluctant to undertake the work, until sufficient time had elapsed to satisfy me, at least, that unless I took it upon myself it might remain unwritten, and for ever lost, except to the memory of a few of those who, like myself, participated in it. This story, which must of necessity be in the form of a diary of events, is made up largely from private memoranda which were made day after day, with the sole object of refreshing the memory, when relating an account of the journey upon my return home. In rewriting my diary, however, I have made use of all the material I could gather, and from whatever source. Excerpt from In Indian Mexico: A Narrative of Travel and Labor The reading public may well ask, Why another travel book on Mexico? Few countries have been so frequently written up by the traveler. Many books, good, bad, and indifferent, but chiefly bad, have been perpetrated. Most of these books, however, cover the same ground, and ground which has been traversed by many people. Indian Mexico is practically unknown. The only travel-book regarding it, in English, is Lumholtz's Unknown Mexico. The indians among whom Lumholtz worked lived in northwestern Mexico; those among whom I have studied are in southern Mexico. The only district where his work and mine overlap is the Tarascan area. In fact, then, I write upon an almost unknown and untouched subject. Lumholtz studied life and customs; my study has been the physical type of south Mexican indians. Within the area covered by Lumholtz, the physical characteristics of the tribes have been studied by Hrdlicka. His studies and my own are practically the only investigations within the field. There are two Mexicos. Northern Mexico to the lati tude of the capital city is a mestizo country; the indians of pure blood within that area occupy limited and circum scribed regions. Southern Mexico is indian country; there are large regions, where the mestz'zos, not the indians, are the exception. From the time of my first contact with Mexican indians, I was impressed with the notable dif ferences between tribes, and desired to make a serious study of their types. Excerpt from The Railway Revolution in Mexico This was not a matter of great moment so long as Spain's colonial restrictions on trade were maintained. A few Indians or a few donkeys would carry at a single trip all that any town received from Spain in the course of a year; and the colonists were thus thrown back upon their immediate efforts for the satisfaction of their wants; and the king, by prohibiting trade between the colonies, emphasized their isolation, and indicated the uselessness of means of communication. This restrictive policy of Spain with regard to her colonies tended to place the European settlers on the economic basis of the Indians. A short period of the kind of life to which they were reduced made them forget most of the wants that had belonged to their previous station, and made it comparatively easy to provide what seemed to be an adequate satisfaction of those remaining. But by the imperfection of the means of production, and of internal transportation, a vast amount of force was consumed without great results. It is not enough to say of this case that labor was cheap, and to find in this a justification of its unprofitable use. Labor was cheap because, through the force of custom and the restrictions of the law, it continued to be used in such ways that its product could afford no larger compensation. By referring to Spain's restrictions on trade with and in America, the accomplishment of ends with rude means, and the employment of human and animal power directly with little use of mechanical appliances, we indicate the early character of Mexico's economic system, a system which became so thoroughly rooted in custom that its main characteristics were preserved well into this century; and some of its features are conspicuous in the Mexican life of the present. Fruit is still carried into the City of Mexico on the backs of men, over distances requiring journeys of several days; and when you buy it there in the market, you think it still cheap, from which may be inferred how little must be the daily compensation of these men, and, in relation to the result, how great the expenditure of force.
