It seems that Ralph went on to Oxford for a short spell, for a Ralph Hamor of London was admitted to Brasenose College in 1605, matriculated in 1606 at the age of seventeen and left without taking a degree. But the Latinized prose of the True Discourse is that of an educated man and I feel sure that this Ralph Hamor is our man. He refers to himself in the tract, written in 1614, as young in years and knowledge, and this would make him the not im probable age of twenty-five at that time. America is a unique nation in history. No nation has been as free, prosperous, charitable, and virtuous. This has nothing to do with any inherent value of the American people, but has to do with the valuable ideas upon which she was founded. Seven foundational ideas are examined that produced the American Dream, all of which are Biblical in their origin and were planted by the early settlers. The first seed principles were planted in Jamestown 400 years ago. Though often ignored, Christianity was vital for the beginning of Virginia; God's hand was evident in preserving the colony and in the lives of many of its founders. The American Dream looks at Rev. Richard Hakluyt, the man most influential in English colonization in the new world, and his motive "to inlarge the glory of the gospell." It documents the important role of the Christian faith in the founding of Virginia, and shows how the colonists' desire to propagate the Christian religion, as recorded in the First Charter of Virginia (1606), was fulfilled in Pocahontas and other native Americans. The ideas that made America exceptional were planted and grew in all the colonies, producing much fruit in the early American republic. Today, however, these ideas are under attack and are being displaced by secular ideas. For the American Dream to continue, we must remember from where we came and return the nation to its original Godly covenant.

In 1584 Walter Raleigh received a patent from Queen Elizabeth to settle an English colony on Roanoke Island, on the Outer Banks of present-day North Carolina, soon to be named Virginia. In The Divided Dominion, Ethan A. Schmidt examines the social struggle that created Bacon's Rebellion, focusing on the role of class antagonism in fostering violence toward native people in seventeenth-century Virginia. This provocative volume places a dispute among Virginians over the permissibility of eradicating Native Americans for land at the forefront in understanding this pivotal event. Myriad internal and external factors drove Virginians to interpret their disputes with one another increasingly along class lines. The decades-long tripartite struggle among elite whites, non-elite whites, and Native Americans resulted in the development of mutually beneficial economic and political relationships between elites and Native Americans. When these relationships culminated in the granting of rights—equal to those of non-elite white colonists—to Native Americans, the elites crossed a line and non-elite anger boiled over. A call for the annihilation of all Indians in Virginia united different non-elite white factions and molded them in widespread social rebellion. The Divided Dominion places Indian policy at the heart of Bacon's Rebellion, revealing the complex mix of social, cultural, and racial forces that collided in Virginia in 1676. This new analysis will interest students and scholars of colonial and Native American history.
