Since 1824, Bahians have marked independence with a popular festival that contrasts sharply with the official commemoration of Brazil's independence on 7 September. The Dois de Julho (2 July) festival celebrates the day the Portuguese troops were expelled from Salvador in 1823, the culmination of a year-long war that gave independence a radical meaning in Bahia. Bahia's Independence traces the history of the Dois de Julho festival in Salvador, the Brazilian state's capital, from 1824 to 1900. Hendrik Kraay discusses how the festival draws on elements of saints' processions, carnivals, and civic ritual in the use of such distinctive features as the indigenist symbols of independence called the caboclos and the massive procession into the city that re-enacts the patriots' victorious entry in 1823. Providing a social history of celebration, Kraay explains how Bahians of all classes, from slaves to members of the elite, placed their stamp on the festivities and claimed recognition and citizenship through participation. Analyzing debates published in newspapers – about appropriate forms of commemoration and the nature of Bahia's relationship to Brazil – as well as theatrical and poetic representations of the festival, this volume unravels how Dois de Julho celebrations became so integral to Bahia's self-representation and to its politics. The first history of this unique festival's origins, Bahia's Independence reveals how enthusiastic celebrations allowed an active and engaged citizenry to express their identity as both Bahians and Brazilians and to seek to create the nation they desired.

O presente estudo tem como finalidade desvendar o espaço urbano da cidade de Salvador-Bahia, cidade que se apresenta com uma estrutura urbana extremamente desigual, tendo em vista a precariedade no atendimento às demandas dos bairros periféricos da cidade, espaços "socialmente desiguais", lugar da população em sua grande parte pobre e negra. A deficiente atenção dada pelo poder público a esses locais possibilita a ampliação e a consolidação das desigualdades socioespaciais nesses bairros, aumentando as dificuldades cotidianas enfrentadas pelos moradores. Assim, surge a pergunta: quais motivos levam a tamanho descaso por parte do poder público? Uma vez que, nestes espaços, a ausência do poder público contribui de forma direta com a precária infraestrutura urbana. Buscamos neste estudo analisar as gestões que ocorreram no período de 1996 a 2021, realizando uma profunda pesquisa das ações de políticas públicas e planejamento urbano que ocorreram na cidade, principalmente nos espaços dos denominados "sujeitados ao sistema".

This book is a visual guide to the territorial dynamics operating within a territory. The reading of such dynamics is fundamental in understanding the role of food in cities. This atlas provides a refreshing approach to the study of the city and of its territory, expanded from the perspective of the food system. This book illustrates the impacts of urban planning options on the function of the contemporary Food System of the Lisbon Region, while disclosing its associated urban form solutions. It provides a possible methodology for the reading of the food system based on an analysis of planning instruments and their morphological outcomes, both in the territory but also on the various built forms which have resulted over time. A key focus of the atlas is exploring how planning has regulated the evolution of the Lisbon Region since the 20th century and its implications on the food system. The atlas results from an exhaustive survey and research work conducted in Lisbon Metropolitan Area for a research project, SPLACH – Spatial Planning for Change, for the past 3 years, in terms of the analysis of its Food System and Urban Planning, aiming to inform the delineation of planning strategies towards a sustainable urban environment. Em que pese o contexto histórico em que os artigos científicos foram escritos ter se modificado após uma década, entendo que as pesquisas, os dados (muito difícil de serem obtidos) e análises apresentados podem ser utilizados para subsidiar novos estudos e tomadas de decisão e desta certa forma, contribuir para a melhoria da condição socioambiental não só da região estudada, mas de todo o nosso planeta.
