Dois dos romances de Jane Austen, Orgulho e preconceito e Emma, são analisados na perspectiva do Bildungsroman, haja vista envolverem o processo de desenvolvimento moral e psicológico de seus personagens no ambiente social do interior da Inglaterra do século XIX. Os romances retratam a ruptura com a tradição literária em meio a uma sociedade que passava por muitas mudanças, como o declínio da aristocracia e a ascensão da burguesia, o alto índice de migração e urbanização e o surgimento do público leitor feminino, tendo esse contribuído para popularizar a leitura, para incrementar o mercado livreiro e, principalmente, revolucionar a literatura que, de "bela escrita", passou a se aproximar da linguagem popular e a tratar de assuntos da vida cotidiana de gente comum. Nesse contexto, Jane Austen, diferente da característica de "escrita para mocinhas" atribuída à sua obra, revelou traços críticos nesses romances, envolvendo desde um ambiente político até a mentalidade social da época, com personagens que nasceram e se desenvolveram nesse meio, mas que, apesar do aprendizado restringido ao lar, eram "heroínas" por amadurecer e falar de seus sentimentos. Analisar os dois romances nesse contexto permitiu entendê-los como romances de formação, logo enquadrá-los no Bildungsroman.
