Atraído por histórias de fantasmas, Henry James deu um passo certeiro para a consolidação da literatura gótica, ou do terror psicológico, como alguns críticos preferem classificar esta obra que, até hoje, levanta discussões por conta das possibilidades de interpretação – talvez por isso "A volta do parafuso" tenha recebido tantas adaptações para cinema e TV.
