This is the story of a shy and unremarkable nobody who learned to be a gyroplane pilot and consequently discovered a wider world. Bored with the daily routine in the 1980s, a spur-of-the-moment decision to fly a light aircraft changed the entire course of my life. I had no intention of becoming a pilot—people like me don’t do things like that—but flying soon grew mundane, and the initial thrill wore thin. In an effort to recapture that lost spark of wonder, I tried a small helicopter and became captivated by the rotary-winged bug. My fate was sealed when, just a couple of months later, I saw Wing Commander Ken Wallis (the real James Bond) flying his famous gyroplane, Little Nellie. The addiction was incurable, and I was quite beyond help. However, gyroplanes have a bad reputation, and people tried hard to dissuade me. With so few gyronauts scattered across the UK in the pre-Internet 1990s, it felt like trying to join a secret society. The only available machines were single-seat, and the only way to learn to fly was to own one. No one said this was going to be easy! My quest led me to Cornwall, where a small group of autorotational veterans took me under their collective wing. Thanks to them, Delta-J was born, and they taught me how to stay alive, working from the ground up. Twenty years later, my rotary-winged obsession took this hesitant mouse across the English Channel, where I discovered the unimaginable freedom of the French ultralight world. My tiny rotorcraft and I are now part of that world. It has been a voyage of discovery and new horizons, with ups and downs in every sense—a journey I could never have imagined when I took that first aeroplane flight in 1985. Gyroplanes have been my greatest adventure!

Freedom All The Way Up proposes four intertwined elements that make up the meaning of life—self-worth, purpose, identity, and hope. Materialism (atheism) claim the universe has no meaning, so there is no larger purposeful story into which we can place ourselves—we are left on our own to construct meaning for our lives. Barrigar argues, though, that the universe possess God’s meaning and purpose—to provide the space and conditions by which to bring about the existence of agape-capable beings in agape-loving relationships with God and with others. In effect, the universe is a great ‘freedom system’ designed by God with freedom built in ‘all the way up’, from the Big Bang to the emergence of big brains and free will. Barrigar describes the emergence of this system through his novel agape/probability account of God’s design for the universe, which integrates such disciplines as quantum physics, statistical mechanics, probability theory, evolutionary psychology, neuroscience, and game theory. This system sets up the conditions for a fundamental choice between autonomous freedom, which focuses principally on self, and agapic freedom, which focuses principally on God and on others. Materialism chooses autonomous freedom, but thereby introduces nihilism into each of the elements of meaning. In turns out that nihilism is a much greater problem for Materialism than suffering is for Theism. In contrast, agapic freedom infuses self-worth, purpose, identity, and hope with God’s agape-love, dispelling Materialism’s inherent nihilism. Freedom All The Way Up provides a dramatic new proposal for God and the meaning of life in our scientific and humanist age.

My prayer for those who are reading this book is that the spirit of change will take control of your total being, and drive you from Lodebar to grace. One of the saddest parts about the unexpected challenges that life brings is that, people around you do not always understand what you are suffering or why. This kind of misunderstanding validates why Job maintained his integrity; in his challenges, he said: "Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways before him" (Job13:15). Job did what some of us do in suffering; we get the source of our affliction twisted. We blame God for what is wrong, not realizing that what is meant for evil, God meant for our good. We need to learn how to trust God when everything around us is falling apart. "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen" (Hebrews 11:1). We must activate this truth during our time of despair. We must trust God even when we cannot trace Him. When everything is pointing in the opposite direction, we need to have our faith in God. No matter what you feel like in your downward state, God is in control. He "works all things after the council of His own will" (Ephesians 1:11). "Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning" (Psalms 30:5). Don't give up or give in to the tactics of the enemy.
