Occult Scholar Mitch Horowitz Explores Magick in History and Practice for the Hands-On Seeker ”Simplicity," wrote legendary occultist Jack Parsons “has been the key to victory in all idea wars and, at present, magick does not have it.” Practical Magick, acclaimed historian and esotericist Mitch Horowitz responds to this call, distilling magick to its core essentials. Drawing upon ancient, Hermetic, Renaissance-era, and modern sources, Mitch dissects the building blocks of magick and provides formulas of immediacy, simplicity, and potency. He also surveys the history of magick, from deepest antiquity through the work of modernist intellects ranging from Newton and Schopenhauer to Crowley and Spare, finding connections to current studies in psychical research, quantum theory, and perceptual-based reality. Readers receive to-the-point instruction in sex transmutation, sigil work, Tarot, backwards causation, the power of silence, tilting the scales of luck, magickal environments, and “spontaneous deity petition.” Mitch shows how to maximize your practice—and not overlook results when they arrive (a common malady). Also considered are delicate topics such as the lefthand path, curses, modern novelties in magick and Hermeticism, the ethics of magick, and the bulletproof veracity of ESP research. Mitch asks, finally, whether magick can be practiced without rite or ritual, delivering the individual to his or her fullest gait. Here is an unprecedented journey from a “believing historian” who undoes historical knots and explores magick in its richest and most practical dimensions. “I love Mitch Horowitz”—Dan Aykroyd "An amazing author”—Duncan Trussell “The thinking-man’s mage”—Douglas Rushkoff “Mitch is solid gold”—David Lynch “Horowitz’s reflections are grounded in his history and a life of personal experimentation. He is not proposing yet another ‘system,’ nor asking the reader to believe or agree with him; instead, his invitation is to follow him to the fringes of reason and try things out for oneself.”—Ferdinando Buscema, Boing Boing

This “toothy follow-up to Datlow’s first-rate Blood Is Not Enough” offers “admirably inventive variations on vampirism” (Kirkus Reviews). Featuring stories by Jonathan Carroll, Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, and Robert Silverberg, A Whisper of Blood is a “consistently engrossing anthology” from award-winning editor Ellen Datlow (Publishers Weekly). Continuing to expand the boundaries of the concept of vampirism—as she did in her first collection, Blood Is Not Enough—Datlow has assembled eighteen fascinating stories that range from tales of literal vampires to what she calls “metaphorical bloodsuckers,” who can drain another’s life force without ever sinking their teeth into necks. In “Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep” by Suzy McKee Charnas, an elderly Jewish woman who’s taken her own life has second thoughts and makes a deal to become a vampire to stay immortal, the only condition being she has to drink blood by request only. An amnesiac operative tries to sort out if a secret government agency is trying to help him regain his memory or is wiping it clean in Chelsea Quinn Yarbro’s Kafkaesque “Do I Dare to Eat a Peach?” And in Jonathan Carroll’s “The Moose Church,” a tourist in Sardinia is literally scarred by asking questions of death in his dreams . . . A Whisper of Blood includes contributions by Suzy McKee Charnas, Karl Edward Wagner, Robert Silverberg, Kathe Koja, Elizabeth Massie, Barry N. Malzberg, Rick Wilber, Jonathan Carroll, Thomas Ligotti, Melissa Mia Hall, David J. Schow, Jack Womack, Melinda M. Snodgrass, Thomas Tessier, Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, K. W. Jeter, Pat Cadigan, and Robert Holdstock and Garry Kilworth.

Brahmananda Patro (J B Patro) retired as a Deputy Chief Executive from the Nuclear Fuels Complex, Hyderabad (earlier in Bhabha Atomic Research Centre), specialized in the production of Nuclear Fuels for Power Reactors. He is a member of the early pioneering team in the production of natural uranium, right from milling ore to finished fuel for nuclear power reactors operating in India. During his long service he had the chance to interact and participate in a number of scientific seminars in India and abroad. Drawn to the teachings of Lord Krishna right from a very early age, Mr. Patro viewed Bhagavad-Gita as a treatise on the Physics of energy-The Laws of Thermodynamics-the very cosmic laws that govern of our Universe and conduct our lives as the rita of the Vedas. He has compiled, edited and since published Sree MahaBhagavatam in English translated from original Sanskrit by late Swami Ramakrishna Brahmananda. Enchanted by Lord Krishna’s personality and researching into the classical and contemporary literature on Krishna, his book The Life and Times of Krishna- the Deity Who Lived as Man was published by Wisdom Tree in September 2013.While researching on Krishna Mr. Patro was fascinated by the character of Arjuna, the bosom friend of Krishna. Krishna says on a number of occasions in the Epic Mahabharata that Arjuna is his other self, alter ego. And also, the Puranic literature attributes the duo to the legend of ancient rishis Nara Narayan. Arjuna being an avatar of Nara-The primeval Man or eternal spirit pervading the Universe, always associated with Narayana the Supreme Spirit Vishnu/Krishna. Both are considered as Gods or Sages and accordingly called ‘Deva, Rishi, and Tapasao’. This has been the theme of the book on Pandava hero Arjuna entitled as ‘Two Krishnas and One Chariot-The story of Arjuna. It took about two years to research on the subject from Epic Mahabharata and other related literature. Arjuna was a versatile human, intellectual with an enquiring mind, and a peerless warrior, and Lord Krishna rightly selected him to impart his Science of Yoga which has been handed down to us as Bhagavad Gita.

At the end of the Red River War, any lingering vestige of the fierce Indian hegemony over the Southern Plains was completely crushed and the tribes of native people were now restricted to government-controlled reservations in Oklahoma Territory. The abrupt change left vacant thousands of acres of unclaimed land which the frontier settlers of Texas and other states began to move into and claim as their own. Old customs die hard, however, and for the next few years of transition, there were still echoes of the old ways reverberating across the land.

The Sentinels, once slumbering, now rise to answer this threat. Their journey will be perilous, their trials fraught with danger, but their resolve is unyielding. The Aethelgard Galaxy is dying. Its lifeblood, the luminous energy known as Astralis, is being devoured by the tyrannical Emperor Xylos, leaving a trail of cosmic decay and silencing the Starborn, those once capable of wielding its power. On the desolate mining planet of Ky'lar, Elara dreams of a starlight she’s never known—dreams that echo a forgotten power within her. When a rare celestial event ignites this dormant spark, Xylos senses her awakening and dispatches his merciless Astral Guard to extinguish her flame. Forced to flee, Elara finds an unlikely ally in Marissa Mitchell, a hardened smuggler with secrets as dark as the nebulae they navigate. Aboard the *Stardust Drifter*, they race through treacherous asteroid fields and cosmic storms, pursued by the Emperor’s relentless forces, toward a hidden sanctuary known as Asteria—a necropolis nestled within the dying embers of a nebula. Within Asteria’s crumbling ruins, Elara discovers the truth of Xylos’s tyranny and the devastating consequences of his insatiable hunger. She learns of the Astral Crown, a celestial key capable of rebirthing extinguished stars and restoring the flow of Astralis. Here, she also encounters Jonathan White, the last of the Astral Knights, a stoic warrior scarred by loss and burning for vengeance. He recognizes Elara’s potential and agrees to train her, but warns that reigniting the stars carries a terrible risk: empowering Xylos as well. As Elara’s power grows, so does the danger. Marissa’s past catches up to them, bringing the shadowy organization she once betrayed to Asteria. And Jonathan’s thirst for revenge clashes with his duty to guide Elara, forcing him to choose between personal retribution and the galaxy’s fate. Their journey to unite the fractured civilizations of Aethelgard takes them across breathtaking landscapes – from the corrupted crystal forests of Xylos to the swirling vortexes of the Astral Sea, where forgotten gods whisper cryptic prophecies. Each step reveals not only the galaxy’s history, but also the depths of their own inner struggles. The final confrontation takes place on the vibrant star of Aethelgard Prime, the very heart of the galaxy, where Xylos intends to consume its life force and plunge Aethelgard into irreversible darkness. It’s a race against cosmic annihilation, a desperate gambit to restore balance before all is lost. Elara must make a heartbreaking choice: sacrifice some stars to save the galaxy, or risk everything on a chance to restore them all. The fate of Aethelgard rests on her shoulders, and the whispers of the dying stars may soon be replaced by the nascent hum of rebirth—or the deafening silence of oblivion.
