Excerpt from A Whist Catechism IN this day of new departures, when so many whist theories and intricate problems are being discussed, and so much written in regard to them, the mind of the beginner often finds itself in a condition of bewilderment. Many are discouraged at the out set, and even the advanced student is uncertain which method of play to adopt. Under these circumstances, the manuscript for a new, and somewhat enlarged, edition of a Catechism of Whist has been revised very carefully. It has been my aim to pursue a conservative course, to make all questions and answers as concise as possible, that they may be the more easily understood, and as a text-book be clear and reliable. I am especially indebted to Mr. Nicholas B. Trist for his kind advice and valuable assist ance, and I have made such alterations in this edition as he has suggested. Great care has also been taken, in giving the new and up-to date rules, to do so only after consulting such whist authorities as Mr. Trist, Mr. Fisher Ames, and Mr. Work. These rules deserve the greatest consideration, as they have been proven, by continued practice on the part of many whist experts, to be most successful in taking tricks. Unfortunately in some editions changes were made which instead of improving rather impaired the authors work. The edition which you have chosen for circulation is one which has not been subject to these alterations. The doctrine is clearly stated and questions follow questions in logical order. In addition to the small Catechism in use in some of our schools i it is not only advisable but necessary to introduce at least in the higher grades a larger one. We are living in times when our children must be well grounded in the principles of their faith and the teachings of the Church, For obtaining this fuller instruction I recommend in a special manner your edition of Deharbe's. Excerpt from A Practical Catechism The edition which professes to be the second, is dated London, 1646, and has the writer's name on the title-page and subscribed to the epistle to the reader. The printing of this volume had proceeded as far as the last sheet of the fourth book, before any communication took place between the author, and the bookseller who published it, who added a postscript of the printer explaining that the additions came too late to be inserted in the text, and that he had re medied the difficulty in the best way he could by adding two new books on the Creed and Sacraments at the end; by inserting the matter on just dealing in its due place in the last sheet of the fourth book, and including other particulars in an appendix. This edition contains also an index and a table of contents, both of which refer only to the first four books. Besides the additions in the appendix are some 'less remarkable alterations' which occupy two additional pages, which happen in one instance to anticipate an objec tion made to a passage in the Catechism by Cheynell, who in his haste had forgotten to notice these additional altera tions.
