The Wilderness First Aid Handbook is a handy, quick-reference guide easily accessible with basic wilderness first aid knowledge, but it does not require advanced degrees or experience with medicine and prehospital care. Recognizing that certain knowledge and procedures are outside the scope of a layperson’s training, Dr. Grant Lipman limits the use of technical terms and advanced techniques that may be unfamiliar to some readers or beyond their comfort zone. This system-based, easy-to-follow guide assists the first aid provider when encountering most wilderness emergencies, from cold and heat concerns and blister treatments to high altitude illness and lightning injury prevention—and much more. Typically the most challenging decision in the wilderness environment is when to evacuate a sick or potentially sick person, and as such, each section has detailed decision-making steps to inform you of when to be concerned and when to get out. This guidance is based upon the recent evidence-based consensus statement published by the Wilderness Medical Society on the scope of practice of wilderness first aid. Filled with original, full-color artwork illustrating the techniques and procedures described and with internal-spiral binding and waterproof pages handy for travel into extreme environments, The Wilderness First Aid Handbook is a must-have for every back pocket or backpack.

Margaret Earle, an Eastern girl, thinking she has reached her destination in Arizona, where she is going to teach school, steps off the train at a lonely, desert water tank, and the train moves on, leaving her in the darkness and in a strange, forlorn land. But she steps off into a series of adventures and thrilling events which make entertaining reading indeed. After an unpleasant encounter with one man, she is rescued by another, young Lance Gardley, like herself an Easterner, and out of this meeting grows the romance of the story. Margaret's school and the strange religious life of the community make a splendid setting for this fresh, crisp, western tale.

Fans of the Alaskan classic ONE MAN’S WILDERNESS will enjoy reading this memoir of how its author, Sam Keith, and its subject, Dick Proenneke, first met. After serving as a US Marine during World War II and attending college on the GI Bill, Sam Keith decided to seek adventure and acceptance in Alaska. He arrived on Kodiak Island in July, 1952, where he secured a job as a laborer on the Adak Navy base. He befriended a group of like-minded men there, including Dick Proenneke, who shared a love of the outdoors, hard work, and self-reliance. Keith explored the wilds of South Central Alaska while working on the Navy base, and later as a Stream Guard and Enforcement Patrolman. In his hunting and fishing trips with Dick and his friends, Keith found almost everything he sought. But at the end of three years, Keith decided to go Outside to pursue other dreams. Dick Proenneke tells him, “Sam, you know right well you don’t want to leave this country. Don’t give up on it. Me and you got to figure something out.” In 1973, Keith went on to write ONE MAN'S WILDERNESS: AN ALASKAN ODYSSEY, based on his dear friend’s journals and photography. It was reissued in 1999 and won a National Outdoor Book Award (NOBA). In 2003, portions of text from the book and some of Proenneke's 16mm movies were used in Alone in the Wilderness, which began appearing on US public television stations. The documentary follows Proenneke as he builds a log cabin with only hand tools, and includes reflections on wildlife, weather, and the natural scenery he sees around him. Sam Keith passed away in 2003. But in 2013, his son-in-law, children’s book author/illustrator Brian Lies, discovered in an archive box in their garage a book manuscript, originally written in 1974 after the publication of ONE MAN’S WILDERNESS. FIRST WILDERNESS is the story of Keith’s own experiences, at times harrowing, funny, and fascinating. Along with the original manuscript are photos and excerpts from his journals, letters, and notebooks, woven in to create a compelling and poignant memoir of search and discovery.

Excerpt from The Rose of the Wilderness: Or Washington's First Love The trend of fiction running in the line of works upon the early scenes in our country's history has probably been the incentive that has brought to light the pages of this book. We have had no diary of by-gone days, but we have gleaned from musty records, out of print in the first half of the past century. Histories of the present day as well as those of early date, have lent their aid in securing data, and where such occurs we have given credit. They have also furnished us scenes and characters familiar to all readers of their pages. The period through which our story extends antedates that of the Revolution by over a quarter of a century, although some of our characters figured conspicuously in that great struggle for freedom. The story behind the best-selling book One Man's Wilderness and how author Sam Keith and Dick Proenneke met and forged an everlasting friendship. "Sam, you know right well you don't want to leave this country. Don't give up on it. Me and you got to figure something out." After serving as a US Marine during World War II and attending college on the GI Bill, Sam Keith decided to seek adventure in Alaska as a laborer on the Adak Navy base. There he befriended Dick Proenneke, whose shared love of the outdoors, hard work, and self-reliance quickly bonded an alliance between the two. Together they explored the wilds of South Central Alaska while working on the Navy base, hunting and fishing with friends and breathing in the great outdoors. Keith was ready to leave after three years of finding almost everything he sought--not realizing then how his fate was intrinsically tied to his friend's and how it would lead to writing the best-selling book One Man's Wilderness. Sam Keith passed away in 2003. But in 2013, his son-in-law and children's book author/illustrator Brian Lies discovered in an archive box in their garage a book manuscript, originally written in 1974 after the publication of One Man's Wilderness. First Wilderness is the story of Keith's own experiences, at times harrowing, funny, and fascinating. Along with the original manuscript are photos and excerpts from his journals, letters, and notebooks, woven in to create a compelling and poignant memoir of search and discovery. Foreword by Nick Jans, one of Alaska's foremost authors and photographers, and Afterword by Keith's daughter Laurel Lies.

Canoeing In The Wilderness written by Henrydavid Thoreau and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-04-28 with categories.

At the time Thoreau made this wilderness canoe trip he was forty years old. The record of the journey is the latter half of his The Maine Woods, which is perhaps the finest idyl of the forest ever written. It is particularly charming in its blending of meditative and poetic fancies with the minute description of the voyager's experiences. The chief attraction that inspired Thoreau to make the trip was the primitiveness of the region. Here was a vast tract of almost virgin woodland, peopled only with a few loggers and pioneer farmers, Indians, and wild animals. No one could have been better fitted than Thoreau to enjoy such a region and to transmit his enjoyment of it to others.
