FINALIST - CALIFORNIA BOOK AWARD FOR POETRY Award-winning poet explores new formal terrain in seven long poems against the violence of the present political moment. The third full-length collection from Bay Area poet Alli Warren, Little Hill comprises seven long poems written with propulsive prosody in a daybook fashion, examining our present, politically charged moment. These poems are at once energetic and contemplative, intimate and direct, as Warren focuses her attention on capitalism, gender, love, inequality, and resistance. Despite the dystopian now, Warren finds promise in the smallest human instances of tenderness, ecological connection, and political solidarity. Little Hill is about learning to live and love in the 21st century while not shying away from all there is to struggle against. Praise for Little Hill: "In Little Hill Alli Warren’s principle method is articulation of exquisite units of speech (thought) that, maintaining separation, are capable of connection. The line might be a sentence or a part of one … I mean a delicious sense of grammatical distinctness is maintained. The poet, also a lone unit, seems to exist less in relation than as that lone one, condemning this hard world with its villain work and elusive hierarchies. The language is precise, lush, unexpected and often thrilling. Articulation would seem to be the true other, or maybe nature is. The book is gift more than condemnation, though as the latter it’s unsparing. Still, it’s a gift."—Alice Notley, author of For the Ride and Benediction "The number of gasps and everything else gets lost in the concentration of Little Hill. Alli Warren keeps company with those rare poets whose every new book is their best. 'This is an old machine with a pulley / It makes music work,' Warren writes, reworking the ancient technology of poetry to a shine! Dear Poet, thank you for the wow WOW wowing!"—CAConrad, author of While Standing in Line for Death "Reading Alli Warren’s Little Hill, I find it incredible that amidst the relentless circulation of capital and commodities—and despite attempts to make all life yield to the logics of extraction, work, accumulation, and the entrepreneurial self—a remainder is created, that of poetry. Little Hill embodies a poetics of radical uncertainty, one that attends to its horrific condition of possibility and is produced through the unmooring catastrophes that define our present moment: the destruction of the earth, mass imprisonment, late-capitalism—the litany does not end there. 'I saw the death of the earth in a child’s toy,' she writes. Everywhere the speaker looks there is 'congealed shit, sometimes on sale.' Yet yearning, even as it is raised tentatively, is not crushed. In and against it all, a question is raised—the question of what it means to love in times of terror."—Jackie Wang, author of Carceral Capitalism

The words contained in this book aren't just mere words or everyday "sunshine" poems. Every word, every stanza, is a piece of me, my innermost feelings visually expressed. Although I refer to my collection as "poetry," they all tell intimate personal stories. Some are personal conversations that I've had with Jesus. Subconsciously throughout my life I have analyzed cause/ effect, action/reaction, and based on my own realm of thinking, these poems were the outcome. I never thought that writing would make me feel so complete. Once I've finished a poem, I feel relieved and peaceful. Some may think some of these writings are a bit harsh, or somewhat bitter, but keep in mind, this is how I felt at that moment and I can't take it back, because it would no longer be genuine. Every poem is a reflection of something that happened through my eyes. Thoughts and feelings are just a couple of things that are truly your own in this world. No one can take them from you or alter them without your consent. To those who have a plethora of images or thoughts that constantly run through your mind...take a moment and write them down, it's therapeutic.

“Never before has the delight and wonder experienced in young love, in which is implicit physical discovery, been conveyed with such touching honesty or with rhapsody so involving unconscious pathos. Those who seek to drag any honest writing through the gutters of their own minds will do the same with this. Those who are not afraid of the strange miracle of life will understand this brave verse.” —William Rose Benét

Welcome to "The World's Most Romantic Love Poems." Anyone who has been in love will know that love is truly the meaning of life.. Whether it's love for your partner, your children, your family, or even your hobby, it's all about passion for life. Love is the definition of precisely that - la passion pour la vie - passion for life! In this collection of sixty-seven poems we focus on romantic love. In the lines of each poem you will find the purest expressions of romance, desire, passion, yearning and even desperation. Feelings that transcend life itself. Love speaks to the very nature and meaning of life itself, from moment to moment. If like me, you have experienced true love, you will know that no words can express its all-consuming, tangible power. This collection is a reminder of those feelings - and to value every moment of love that you are lucky enough to experience. Of course, the choice of poems to include is entirely subjective, and other poems could have also been included. However, I hope that you will be happy with this selection of my own personal favorite romantic poems.

Alicia Mountain’s urgent and astonishing debut collection maps a new queer landscape through terrain alive and sensual, defiant and inviting. With a voice that beckons while it howls, Mountain nimbly traverses lyric, confessional, and narrative modes, leaving groundbreaking tracks for us to follow. High Ground Coward offers fists full of soil, leftovers for breakfast, road trip as ritual, twins of lovers and twins of ourselves. This world blooms with hunger-inducing detail, its speakers asking us to consider what it will take to satisfy our own appetites while simultaneously trying to nourish one another. “Ferocious, even the softest part,” Mountain shows us “a way to fall in love with wanting,” leaving us “ravenous, but gradually.” Bearing witness to identity formation in solitude and communion, High Ground Coward is an almanac of emotional and relational seasons. Mountain’s speakers question the meaning of inheritance, illness, violence, mythology, and family architecture. Whether Mountain is at work revealing the divinity of doubt, the entanglement of devotion, or the dominion that place holds over us, High Ground Coward heralds a thrilling poetic debut. From “Scavenger” We three eat food and are in love. This is the easy way to say there are stores beneath the floor. Potatoes and shallots, hard-necked garlic streaked purple, jars beside jars, themselves each staving globes of suction. Preservation, a guardian hunger. In the evening I whisper to the boiled beet, like a naked organ in my flushed hand: You are ground blood, you are new born, you have never been nothing— thawfruit seedflower greenstart rootbulb handpull shedscrub mouthsweet and again.
