Excerpt from A Yacht Voyage Round England I should like to know what they think Of it. As they have never before taken so long a cruise, they may get tired, and wish themselves home again or back at school. Oh no, no! We should like it amazingly. We are sure not to get tired, if papa will take us. We will work our passage; will pull and haul, and learn to reef and steer, and do everything we are told, ' said Oliver. Excerpt from The Romance of Yachting: Voyage the First This Volume of the Romance of Yachting will probably fall into the hands of most persons of intelligence going to sea, whether for pleasure or professmnally and it is likely, also, that it will form an addition to nautical libraries generally. It is proper, therefore, at the outset, for the author to speak of the design of the work. It has been framed mainly with a view to call the attention of Yachters, to the several phenomena ordinarily occurring at sea and on ship-board; but it is by no means so closely confined to nautical matters and technicalities, that landsmen may not read it with profit, and, 'it is hoped, with interest. The old and expe rienced seaman may, haply, also peruse it with amusement and Indulgence and the younger branch of the same profession with instruction. A passage from the book... We had come home from school much earlier than usual, on account ofillness having broken out there; but as none of the boys weredangerously ill, and those in the infirmary were very comfortable, wewere not excessively unhappyWilliam Henry Giles Kingston (1814-1880), was a writer of tales for boys. He was born in London, but spent much of his youth in Oporto. His first book, The Circassian Chief, appeared in 1844. His first book for boys, Peter the Whaler, was published in 1851, and had such success that he retired from business and devoted himself entirely to the production of this kind of literature, in which his popularity was deservedly great; and during 30 years he wrote upwards of 130 tales, including Digby Heathcote (1860), The Three Midshipmen (1862), The Three Lieutenants (1874), The Three Commanders (1875) and In the Rocky Mountains (1878). He also conducted various papers, including The Colonist, and Colonial Magazine and East India Review. He was also interested in emigration, volunteering, and various philanthropic schemes. For services in negotiating a commercial treaty with Portugal he received a Portuguese knighthood, and for his literary labours a Government pensionThe very day of our arrival home, when we were seated at dinner, and my brother Oliver and I were discussing the important subject of how we were to spend the next ten or twelve weeks, we heard our papa, who is a retired captain of the Royal Navy-and who was not attending to what we were talking about-say, as he looked across the table to mamma:"Would you object to these boys of ours taking a cruise with me round England this summer?"We pricked up our ears, you may be sure, to listen eagerly to the reply. Looking at Oliver, then at me, she said:"I should like to know what they think of it. As they have never before taken so long a cruise, they may get tired, and wish themselves home again or back at school."

Excerpt from Polar Gleams: An Account of a Voyage on the Yacht 'Blencathra' Islands and the North Cape, into the misty terrors of the Kara Sea. I remember, as a yachtsman, thinking it something of an achievement getting as far as Iceland and the Lofoden Islands; but here is a young lady who carries us of? To Lapland, Waigatz Straits, the northern coasts of Asia, and half way through the north-west pas sage, besides casting an occasional sheep's-eye at the North Pole. Moreover, so far from her cor sage consisting Of oak and three-fold brass, as the ingenuous Horace imagined, our authoress seems to have left her sealskin jacket behind her, and to have graced the Arctic Circle in a frock of Cowes serge. That a last year's debutante should thus exchange the shining floors, wax lights, and valses of a London ball-room for the silent shores Of N ovaia Zemlia and the Taimyr Peninsula, with their accompaniments Of ice-floes and winds fresh from the cellars Of Boreas, exhibits the untamable audacity Of our modern maidens. However. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
