Excerpt from A Year in the Great Republic, Vol. 2 of 2 Meanwhile, at Cincinnati the river went on rising day by day, the snow fell, likewise the rain, the mud thickened if possible, every one looked gloomy and recalled the terrible floods of two years ago. We were only too glad to pack up and escape whilst escape was still possible. Even then the water was over the wheels of our train as we left the station. Next day the trains were unable to run at all. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Stories of the American Revolution, Vol. 2 A great history does not of necessity always mean a long history. The war of the American Revolution may not be great when it is considered in the light of a war; but it certainly is great as an event. Those heroic struggles of our fore fathers are as worthy of remembrance as the country they bequeathed us is worthy of preserva tion. Indeed, the two in a sense may be said to be joined. The price paid for an article some times enhances the value of the possession in the eyes of the possessor. The education of an American citizen to-day may be said not to be complete without a due appreciation of the aims, struggles, and efforts of those who have bequeath'ed their possessions to us. A heritage has no less value when we realize what it has cost in life and in sacrifice. Our ancestors lifted up a new banner before the gaze of the world. It is ours to hold it up. And no country needs a strong patriotic feeling among its people so much as does a republic. But patriotism, to be valuable, must be intelligent; and there can be no intelligence without knowledge. Inspiration to be patriotic can best be incited by learning of and from those who were themselves patriots. One such man as George Washington is worth more to our land than a horde of men who can only make money. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The New America and the Fast East, Vol. 2 During that period, we have changed from one of the weakest to the most powerful nation on the globe. Fifty years ago, the monarchs who governed what were then the leading nations of the earth established diplomatic relations with scarcely a thought of the young republic on the western shore of the Atlantic. N ow, the powerful nations of the world seek our friendship, and none venture any important diplomacy without first learning whether it will be acceptable to this great republic. This volume is unique in its focus on cross-fertilisation in the arts, on very specific exploration of liminal spaces, and on the representation of marginal figures in writing. The essays here grew out of the Borders and Margins colloquium, held at Leeds Trinity University, UK, in April 2010, which was the fourth in a series of colloquia. This collection, moreover, contributes to a growing area of scholarship which explores Anglo-French interactions and exchanges. In choosing the term “liminality”, the editors are aware of its nuanced implications, allowing suggestions both of the initial and the transitional. The contributors here are academics from the fields of literature, history and art history, and their essays cover art history, literature, cultural history, the arts, and faith. Altogether, this collection evokes a sense of temporal shift, in that changes in values and focus are uncovered as the nineteenth century progresses. Some have an ekphrastic quality, showing how pictures can have a narrative, and how pictures, as well as texts, can be encoded with moral and social interpretations. Close scrutiny is applied to different kinds of texts, fiction and non-fiction, and the purposes for which they were produced. This book will appeal to scholars and academics interested in a wide range of cross-categorisational transactions in nineteenth-century Britain. It will be of interest to scholars of Victorian culture, and English nineteenth-century literature and art, particularly in terms of genre, as well as to academics interested in the development of social, personal, and national identities.

Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work.
