Uno dei gioielli monumentali del Lazio in mostra nel cuore di Roma: il Complesso del Vittoriano ospita una suggestiva esposizione dedicata a un capolavoro dell'architettura gotico cistercense in Italia, l'Abbazia di Fossanova. Ad 800 anni dalla sua consacrazione, un excursus curato in ogni dettaglio ce ne racconta la storia complessa, legata alla scomparsa di San Tommaso d'Aquino, patrono di Priverno, ma anche a tutti gli sconvolgimenti, le scoperte e gli uomini che hanno segnato gli otto secoli di vita dell'Abbazia. La mostra quindi non è solo un'eccezionale raccolta di manoscritti, sculture e ceramiche, ma un vero e proprio itinerario scavato nel tempo: la rappresentazione fedele di una stratificazione di culture e saperi che vanno tutelati, conservati, fatti conoscere, in particolare alle nuove generazioni. Questo l'impegno che la Regione ha voluto far suo, sostenendo il programma di iniziative del Comune di Fossanova. Lavorare per il recupero di testimonianze importanti come quella dell'Abbazia ha un enorme valore storico e culturale, ma è anche una grande opportunità di promozione del nostro territorio. Vogliamo mostrare ai milioni di turisti che ogni anno visitano Roma, sempre più numerosi, che esiste nella nostra regione una ricchezza e una quantità di luoghi d'attrazione tutta da scoprire. A partire dai monumenti a carattere religioso. Il Lazio è, da sempre, terra ospitale e accogliente, punto di arrivo per viaggiatori e pellegrini che vengono qui da ogni angolo della terra, per visitare la culla della cristianità. Le porte del Lazio sono sempre aperte: stiamo lavorando per rendere più fruibili le bellezze lasciate dalla nostra storia e le strade su cui essa si è costruita. In Hospitals and Urbanism in Rome 1200 – 1500, Carla Keyvanian offers a new interpretation of the urban development of Rome during three seminal centuries by focusing on the construction of public hospitals. These monumental charitable institutions were urban expressions of sovereignty. Keyvanian traces the political reasons for their emergence and their architectural type in Europe around 1200. In Rome, hospitals ballasted the corporate image of social elites, aided in settling and garrisoning vital sectors and were the hubs around which strategies aimed at territorial control revolved. When the strategies faltered, the institutions were rapidly abandoned. Hospitals in areas of enduring significance instead still function, bearing testimony to the influence of late medieval urban interventions on modern Rome.
