At the turn of the 20th century, physics entered into a new world, the invisible silent world of atoms, atomic nuclei and elementary particles. Our twentieth century then produced the theory that has been serving physicists so faithfully for over sixty years -- quantum mechanics. The landscape of the new world is quire unlike our own. So different that phsyicists frequently lack words to describe it. Quantum mechanics had to create new conceptions for the world of the ultrasmall, bizarre conceptions beyond the scope of pictorial imagery. Customary physical laws cease to operate in the new world. Particles lose their dimensions and acquire the properties of waves. Electrons and the other building stones of matter can pass through impenetrable barriers, or they can vanish altogether leaving only photons in their place. Those are the things quantum mechanics dealt with. This book will tell you about the origin and development of quantum mechanics, about its new concepts. It will describe how the new theory deciphered the secrets of the structure of atoms, molecules, crystals, atomic nulei, and how quantum mechanics is dealing with the problem of the most fundamental of all properties of matter --the interaction of particles and the relationships between fields and matter.

Science, with its inherent tension between the known and the unknown, is an inexhaustible mine of great stories. Collected here are twenty-six among the most enchanting tales, one for each letter of the alphabet: the main characters are scientists of the highest caliber most of whom, however, are unknown to the general public. This book goes from A to Z. The letter A stands for Abel, the great Norwegian mathematician, here involved in an elliptic thriller about a fundamental theorem of mathematics, while the letter Z refers to Absolute Zero, the ultimate and lowest temperature limit, - 273,15 degrees Celsius, a value that is tremendously cooler than the most remote corner of the Universe: the race to reach this final outpost of coldness is not yet complete, but, similarly to the history books of polar explorations at the beginning of the 20th century, its pages record successes, failures, fierce rivalries and tragic desperations. In between the A and the Z, the other letters of the alphabet are similar to the various stages of a very fascinating journey along the paths of science, a journey in the company of a very unique set of characters as eccentric and peculiar as those in Ulysses by James Joyce: the French astronomer who lost everything, even his mind, to chase the transits of Venus; the caustic Austrian scientist who, perfectly at ease with both the laws of psychoanalysis and quantum mechanics, revealed the hidden secrets of dreams and the periodic table of chemical elements; the young Indian astrophysicist who was the first to understand how a star dies, suffering the ferocious opposition of his mentor for this discovery. Or the Hungarian physicist who struggled with his melancholy in the shadows of the desert of Los Alamos; or the French scholar who was forced to hide her femininity behind a false identity so as to publish fundamental theorems on prime numbers. And so on and so forth. Twenty-six stories, which reveal the most authentic atmosphere of science and the lives of some of its main players: each story can be read in quite a short period of time -- basically the time it takes to get on and off the train between two metro stations. Largely independent from one another, these twenty-six stories make the book a harmonious polyphony of several voices: the reader can invent his/her own very personal order for the chapters simply by ordering the sequence of letters differently. For an elementary law of Mathematics, this can give rise to an astronomically large number of possible books -- all the same, but - then again - all different. This book is therefore the ideal companion for an infinite number of real or metaphoric journeys.

This little book concentrates on the foundations of modern physics (its OC ABC''sOCO) and its most fundamental constants: c OCo the velocity of light and ? OCo the quantum of action. First of all, the book is addressed to professional physicists, but in order to achieve maximal concentration and clarity it uses the simplest (high school) mathematics. As a result many pages of the book will be useful to college students and may appeal to a more general audience."

The goal of this book is to offer the reader a gut level understanding of quantum mechanics. After reading this book and someone asks if you understand quantum mechanics, you should feel comfortable saying, "Yes!" This book does not go into all the business of faster than light travel, consciousness, or quantum thought. It presents what quantum mechanics is and what it means to your everyday life. Quantum mechanics evolved with several observations over the last 2000 years. The book presents the critical events in a concise way. Often people cannot see why each is important. For example, why should we care how water waves cross over each other? After each of these events is discussed, a paragraph titled, "Why is this important?" is presented. The purpose of this is to string all of these events together logically so the reader can grasp the meaning of it all as one concept. Often when books discuss quantum mechanics they attempt to validate their efforts in explaining it by telling you that quantum mechanics is used in LED's, lasers, and transistors. They do not offer how quantum mechanics applies to those devices. That leaves out half the information you need. This book shows how the quantum mechanical concepts apply to transistor functionality. This author has not seen one book that effectively goes from quantum mechanical concepts to an explanation of how a transistor works. In general, there are two schools of relating to a transistor. One is the theoretical aspects of quantum mechanics. The second is the electrical engineering aspects of electronics. In the theoretical realm, words such as energy level, wave equation, PSI, and probability are used to describe quantum mechanics. They are words associated with theoretical physics. They have special meaning. To comprehend this can be difficult. Then one reads about transistors from an engineering point of view. Then one hears terms like, holes, charge, doping, reverse bias, p-type, and n-type. These, in turn have special meanings. One needs an understanding of one word before one can understand another word used. Understanding all this can be very confusing. This book carefully begins with basic quantum mechanical terms, clearly defines them and carries them logically forward to explain how a transistor works. To be sure, it all is complicated. However, this book carefully moves through several small steps to clarity. When you are done reading this book, you will have a clear understanding of what quantum mechanics is and how a transistor works.
