Thinking about development and the environment simultaneously is one of the biggest scientific and societal challenges of the 21st century. Long on the margins of both scholarly and policy concerns, the countries of the West African Sahel have recently attracted world attention, primarily as a key battleground in the global 'war on terror'. Diverse factors like globalization, geopolitical tensions, and the transformation of lifestyles are strengthening the role of mobility as a structuring dimension of contemporary societies. Social-science research has taken note of these changes, but few studies cross the different forms of mobility, ranging from commuting to tourists and backpackers, and on to seasonal workers or international migrants. The diversity of mobility situations studied in this book highlights the contribution of the reality of mobility in the daily construction of urban, regional, and global spaces, as well as in the redefinition of socio-spatial concepts. By using an interdisciplinary relational approach, the book revisits certain concepts such as exclusion, heritage, or distance, in order to understand spatialities beyond the oppositions of fixity/mobility, private/public, or here/elsewhere. The book sheds light on the capacities for resistance of mobile persons in Singapore, Dakar, Bangkok, Amman, Paris, New York, or Mexico by studying the power relationships that are established in situations of mobility. By deciphering the values that characterize regimes of (im)mobility, the contributors stress the normative injunctions of public policies and social practices. The originality of the work lies in capturing the deployment of alternative spatialities and underlining how they are reshaped between sedentary and mobility regimes. It highlights the importance of fully associating mobility with its characteristics of ephemerality and fluidity, in our theorizations and understandings of spatialities. By taking a post-structuralist posture, the book makes it possible to establish a logic of ‘and’ to design a ‘between’ of things, and to reverse ontology. This allows the temporary and the connected to be rehabilitated, beyond distance, in our practical knowledge of spatialities and territorialities. As such, the volume will be of interest to scholars of geography, sociology, anthropology, and urban studies with interests in mobility, migration and relational thought.

12 pages de photos couleurs Ce livre est né de la rencontre avec des jeunes gens qui travaillent gratuitement et dont les familles payent parfois pour assurer leur formation dans des spécialités artisanales du secteur informel des grandes villes africaines. Face à ce constat, une série de questionnements s’est imposée : qu’y a-t-il derrière le comportement de ces jeunes, quels rapports sociaux encadrent leur apprentissage et déterminent leur avenir, quelle est leur position dans le monde de la production et du travail ? Pour y répondre, l’auteur veut d’abord échapper à l’alternative faite d’attendrissement ou d’indignation et manifester toute son insatisfaction vis-à-vis de la rhétorique des petits métiers et des vertus de l’économie informelle. Il a fallu alors élargir le champ de l’analyse en remontant aux sources de certaines notions fondamentales, telles celles de travail et de dépendance personnelle. Ce n’est qu’après une réflexion sur ces catégories qu’il devenait possible d’aborder de manière plus systématique et critique l’univers du travail en Afrique, dans ses formes traditionnelles et communautaires, salariées et modernes, rémunérées ou gratuites. Cette nécessité d’élargissement du regard s’est manifestée au fur et à mesure que progressait l’enquête sur l’apprentissage urbain, donnant lieu à un long parcours à travers les notions théoriques de travail et de dépendance (Première partie), en passant par les diverses manifestations historiques du travail en Afrique (Deuxième partie), pour aboutir finalement aux rapports sociaux d’apprentissage (Troisième partie). Ce parcours va donc du général au particulier, des notions théoriques à la pratique d’une forme particulière de travail gratuit, celui des apprentis, catégorie au demeurant peu problématisée au point de vue des rapports sociaux qui l’encadrent. L’appel à des catégories générales et à une histoire globale, qui n’isolent pas l’Afrique dans un espace et un temps propres à elle seule mais la mettent en relation avec l’économie-monde capitaliste, constitue en outre une ouverture vers la question de la modernité, interrogée ici de manière critique. Anthropologue, Fabio Viti a obtenu un doctorat de l’EHESS en 1991 avec une thèse portant sur l’anthropologie politique et historique des Baoulé de la Côte d’Ivoire. Il est l’auteur et l’éditeur de plusieurs ouvrages, ainsi que de nombreux articles de revues. Il a enseigné dans les Universités d’Urbino, Siena et Aix-en-Provence. Il est actuellement professeur à l’Università di Modena e Reggio Emilia (Dipartimento di Studi Linguistici e Culturali), où il enseigne l’ethnologie et l’ethnographie.
