Questo volume presenta i lavori didattici sviluppati nell’ambito dei quattro Laboratori di Composizione Architettonica e Urbana 4 e dei relativi corsi di Lettura Morfologica del corso di Laurea Magistrale Architettura 5UE. A partire dall’individuazione di un tema comune – l’insula di Santa Chiara nel Centro Antico della città di Napoli – i Laboratori del quarto anno hanno esplorato i rapporti esistenti oggi tra comunità, architettura e città, concentrandosi. Gli spazi vuoti situati lungo il perimetro del monastero, compresi tra il muro di cinta e il nucleo storico consolidato della cittadella monastica, sono stati oggetto di una riflessione mirata alla loro valorizzazione e integrazione nella città attraverso strategie di rigenerazione urbana. Investigando questi luoghi, i Laboratori hanno affrontato il rapporto tra architettura e città, sperimentando metodologie e modalità d’intervento in un contesto denso e fortemente stratificato nel tempo, un campo privilegiato di studio e verifica per un’architettura capace di perpetuare i valori e i significati della città storica, resistendo al tempo e superando la transitorietà delle mode. I saggi e i progetti raccolti in questo volume illustrano e descrivono i risultati di un’esperienza che ha reso possibile la convivenza fra antico e nuovo, fra comunità e architettura, rafforzando significati e caratteri e continuando il ruolo civico e culturale della cittadella monastica.

In 2017, during a conference held at the Historical Institute of the University of Wrocław, Poland, an international group of early career researchers and PhD students had the opportunity to discuss the process of transition in cities from early modern times to the present day. This book, arising from the discussions of that meeting, focuses on the social, economic, political and structural transformations of some cities in Europe, the Near East and Asia from the seventeenth century up to the contemporary era. The first part of the text, entitled “Facing the Other: Perception, Relations, (Co)existence” explores the attitudes of the locals towards newcomers to a city, as well as the coexistence of different social, ethnic, religious and cultural groups, and their adaptation, assimilation, integration, and rejection. The second part “The Evolution of the Urban Space” concentrates on municipal and central authorities’ policies that, together with structural transformations in the urban tissue, had a direct impact on public space and the everyday life of the city dwellers. The volume will serve to contribute to the international discussion on the complexity of progressive urbanisation and its consequences from the early modern period onwards.

Analyzes the role of community in the writings of Giorgio Agamben, Roberto Esposito, and Jean-Luc Nancy. Winner of the 2017 Symposium Book Award presented by Symposium: Canadian Journal of Continental Philosophy Community has been both celebrated and demonized as a fortress that shelters and defends its members from being exposed to difference. Instead of abandoning community as an antiquated model of relationships that is ill suited for our globalized world, this book turns to the writings of Giorgio Agamben, Roberto Esposito, and Jean-Luc Nancy in search for ways to rethink community in an open and inclusive manner. Greg Bird argues that a central piece of this task is found in how each philosopher rearticulates community not as something that is proper to those who belong and improper to those who are excluded or where inclusion is based on one’s share in common property. We must return to the forgotten dimension of sharing, not as a sharing of things that we can contain and own, but as a process that divides us up and shares us out in community with one another. This book traces this problem through a wide array of fields ranging from biopolitics, communitarianism, existentialism, phenomenology, political economy, radical philosophy, and social theory.
