Questa raccolta di tesi ed esami degli studenti della Facoltà di Architettura documenta una parte del lavoro svolto nei corsi di progettazione del Prof. Paolo Portoghesi, e nello specifico all'interno del seminario coordinato da Donatella Scatena, che riguardano il periodo che intercorre tra il 1995 e il 2007, anni in cui Portoghesi ha insegnato progettazione. Portoghesi, che fino al 1995 ha avuto la cattedra di storia dell'architettura, afferma di avere un debito verso l'insegnamento della storia, strumento essenziale di conoscenza e di indagine per un progettista. La ricerca vuole testimoniare e raccontare, attraverso i lavori degli studenti, come Portoghesi abbia posto le basi di quello che sarà il suo metodo progettuale, basato sui tre concetti chiave di: architettura urbana in rapporto al luogo, concezione dello spazio come sistema di luoghi, rapporto dell'architettura con la storia e la memoria personale e collettiva. Le nozioni di architettura come luogo e spazio come sistema sono rintracciabili in tutti i progetti presentati nel testo e sono sviluppati soprattutto nelle tesi di laurea. Del rapporto invece tra natura e architettura i giovani architetti non hanno colto solo la suggestione delle forme, ma hanno cercato di carpire le leggi strutturali che regolano la crescita organica, il numero aureo, la serie di fibonacci, l'espressione frattale, l'autorganizzazione della materia e la sua metamorfosi, le regole ferree dell'ordine naturale e dell'ordine più complesso del caos. Il metodo adottato da Portoghesi, e trasmesso attraverso il seminario di Scatena, somiglia a quello di Hans Poelzig nel Bauhaus, che cercava di portare lo studente ad una scelta progettuale libera e consapevole. Con lo scopo non solo di sperimentare una diversa morfologia spaziale, ma di riappropriarsi di un rapporto etico con il mestiere dell'architetto e di sviluppare una nuova alleanza con la terra che l'uomo poeticamente abita. PAOLO PORTOGHESI, figura anomala, che unisce al talento dello storico e del critico quello dell'architetto creatore, ha diretto e dirige riviste di architettura, pubblicato centinaia di articoli e più di cinquanta volumi di storia e teoria dell'architettura, molti dei quali tradotti in più lingue. Ha cominciato a insegnare presso l'Università della Sapienza nel 1962. Attualmente è professore di Geoarchitettura presso la facoltà di architettura "Valle Giulia". È stato il primo direttore del settore architettura della Biennale di Venezia della quale è poi stato presidente. La sua opera architettonica più famosa è la moschea di Roma. DONATELLA SCATENA, architetto, ricercatore, insegna progettazione presso la Facoltà di Architettura Valle Giulia di Roma. Tra le sue pubblicazioni recenti "Sapere/Saper fare.
