For approximately three decades, the abortion debate has polarized America. Views range from the extreme conservative position that all abortions are morally objectionable to the extreme liberal position that abortion throughout all nine months of pregnancy is acceptable. In the middle are those who advocate laws limiting the number of valid reasons for abortion. This comprehensive volume includes bibliographic citations that address the moral and religious aspects of abortion. It covers such topics as the various arguments both for and against abortion, the status of the fetus, and overviews of several religions' stances on abortion. Citations also include references on how Christianity has influenced abortion politics and law, discussions of Operation Rescue, and official statements on abortion by the Catholic Church and several Protestant denominations. Researchers, as well as anyone interested in the moral and religious elements of abortion, will find this resource invaluable. It covers the literature on abortion and religion found in books, essays, journal articles, academic dissertations and Web sites. And, unlike many of the available bibliographies, this one focuses only on the religious and moral issues, therefore providing greater depth on those two issues within one work.

Rather than providing a global solution to the problem of abortion —to abort or not to abort—this volume sheds light on different but equally critical dimensions of abortion in global debate and practice. The aim is to elaborate on different value systems and policies in order to empower individuals to make well-informed decisions about abortion guided by moral reflection. The twenty one chapters of this volume are written by distinguished scholars in each of the religious and non-religious schools of thought, offering an exhaustive survey of the differing religious and legal views on abortion within the international community. The contributors present authoritative discussions in favor of or against abortion based on their perspectives and practices. As a result, the content of this book provides a foundational platform for better understanding, meaningful dialogue, and tolerance on a social issue which has divided individuals, philosophers, theologians, policy makers, and legislators within and across societies for centuries.

Abortion is arguably the most controversial and divisive moral issue of modern times, but up until now the debate has taken place almost exclusively within a Western cultural, religious and philosophical context. For the past three decades in the West arguments both for and against abortion have been mounted by groups of all kinds, from religious fundamentalists to radical feminists and every shade of opinion in between. Rather than mutual understanding, however, the result has been the polarisation of opinion and the deepening of entrenched positions. In the face of this deadlock a new perspective is urgently required. Buddhism is an ancient tradition which over the centuries has refined its distinctive beliefs and values in the course of a long interaction with the major cultures of Asia. As Buddhism continues to engage the attention of the West, the time is now opportune for its views on abortion to be heard. This is the first book to explore the abortion question from a range of Buddhist cultural and ethical perspectives. The approach is interdisciplinary and will be of relevance to those working in fields such as law, ethics, medicine, philosophy, religion, the social sciences and women's studies.

Harrison has both ethical purchase and feminist vision on 'The Issue of Our Age.' Read it, learn, be convicted and act!"" - Rev. Dr. Serene Jones, President of Union Theological Seminary ""Decades after its initial publication, Beverly Wildung Harrison's sex-positive, justice and social welfare affirming study of abortion remains a unique and trailblazing contribution to the field of Christian ethics. From the treatment of women's procreation in the history of Western Christianity to the rhetoric of 1970s abortion politics, she offers meticulous critiques and constructive feminist Christian ideas sorely needed in today's debates about abortion rights."" Traci C. West, author of Disruptive Christian Ethics: When Racism and Women's Lives Matter About the Contributor(s): Two years after Our Right to Choose appeared in 1983, the world of Christian ethics was again impacted by Beverly Wildung Harrison's second groundbreaking book, Making the Connections: Essays in Feminist Social Ethics, edited by Carol S. Robb (Beacon: 1985). Over the next fifteen years, until retiring in 1999 as the Carolyn Williams Beaird Professor of Christian Ethics at New York's Union Theological Seminary, Harrison continued to teach and shape a methodology in feminist social ethics which attracted scores of graduate students, both men and women, who currently occupy professorships in ethics throughout the United States and elsewhere in the world. Her former students also include pastors in the United States and Europe and around the globe in countries as diverse as Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Kenya, and Korea. Since her retirement, Beverly Harrison has continued to consult with former and current graduate students. In 2004, six of her former students worked with Harrison in publishing a commentary on her methodology, Justice in the Making: Feminist Social Ethics (Westminster/John Knox Press). Since 1999, Beverly Harrison has lived in an intentional community in the mountains of western North Carolina where, along with her longtime companion Carter Heyward and several other friends, she continues to work for justice in every venue possible, including active involvement in the Democratic Party and in movements for racial, economic, sexual, and gender justice. She has been particularly devoted to pro-choice work and LGBT justice efforts in the Presbyterian and Episcopal churches and in society at large. Harrison delights in the companionship of several dogs, cats, and horses!

What does it mean to be moral or ethical? How do our choices define our morality? Can one be religious and have a stance on abortion? Is religious faith necessary for morality? When considering abortion, who bears the responsibility-the parents or the wider community? How should we approach legislation on such a deeply personal issue? And in delving deeper, what are the larger implications of abortion, both socially and economically? Often, books on moral or ethical dilemmas present solutions to these questions. However, this book offers a different approach. Instead of providing definitive answers, it explores varied arguments and perspectives, encouraging readers to understand their nuances. The primary goal is not to dictate the 'right' answer but to understand that multiple right answers can coexist, tailored to the sociopolitical and economic context of different societies. By widening our perspectives, we not only promote constructive dialogue but also facilitate compromise and progress. It's vital to understand that while multiple answers can be correct, they can coexist without diminishing one another. If an opposing view gains traction, it doesn't negate our beliefs but rather suggests another valid perspective. This book aims to move away from destructive ideological battles and towards understanding and collaboration. Ultimately, embracing diverse viewpoints is our duty-as citizens, religious followers, parents, leaders, and, fundamentally, as thoughtful individuals. This book challenges you to expand your perspective and truly consider the multitude of answers the world presents.

Sacred Rights written by Daniel C. Maguire and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-04-03 with Religion categories.

This book presents the work of the "Sacred Choices Initiative" of the Religious Consultation on Population, Reproductive Health, and Ethics. The purpose of this Packard and Ford Foundation supported initiative is to attempt to change international discourse on family planning and to rescue this debate from superficial sloganeering by drawing on the moral stores of the world's major and indigenous religions. In many of the world's religions there is a restrictive and pro-natalist view on family planning, and this is one legitimate reading of those religious traditions. As the essays in this volume demonstrate, however, this is not the only legitimate or orthodox view. These authors show that the paramaters of orthodoxy are wider and gentler than that, and that the great religious traditions are wiser and more variegated and nuanced than a simple repetition of the most conservative views would suggest. This theme is carried out in essays on each of the world's major religious traditions, written by scholar practitioners of those faiths.

Beyond Pro Life And Pro Choice written by Kathy Rudy and has been published by Beacon Press (MA) this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996 with Political Science categories.

Beyond Pro-Life and Pro-Choice is a gift to all who want to expand their understanding of the religious, moral, and philosophical aspects of the abortion debate. Ethicist Kathy Rudy examines four systems of belief - Catholicism, evangelical Protestantism, feminism, and classical liberalism as expressed in the medical profession - and reveals the role abortion plays in each. She shows why, in each case, ideas, about abortion are unlikely to change - because they emerge from each community's deeply held values and concerns, which vary from community to community. She demonstrates that constructing the abortion debate as a choice between "pro-life" and "pro-choice" has distorted and misrepresented the ways that many people relate to the issue of abortion, and has obscured the diversity of belief both among and within communities and individuals. Finally, she offers a provocative alternative that would allow every community involved to more freely develop and express its views about the morality of abortion.
