Not many Glaswegian schoolgirls have grown up to become revolutionary heroes of distant, eastern nations but Muriel Stewart Walker did just that. Under a multitude of different names – ‘K’tut Tantri’ and ‘Surabaya Sue’ being the best known – this Scottish-born, self-proclaimed Hollywood scriptwriter joined in the struggle for Indonesian independence after the Second World War and broadcast its revolutionary message to the world on Rebel Radio. But she did more and smuggled arms, and probably drugs, to help finance the new Republic and experienced bloody battle in the November 1945 British attack on Surabaya that some have seen as a war crime. She went on to become an intimate of the revolutionary leaders, Bung Tomo and Soekarno among them, and finally lived to see Indonesia take its place amongst the free nations of the world. Surabaya Sue is virtually unknown in the West and, even in Indonesia, there have always been doubts about her version of events that many have dismissed outright as a blatant mixture of outrageous fantasy and dishonest omissions. Snow over Surabaya happily embraces those doubts and brings a new, spirited account of her adventures in that tempestuous world.

In a grand sweeping narrative, Pacific Air tells the inspiring story of how, despite initial disastrous defeats, a generation of young naval aviators challenged and ultimately vanquished a superior Japanese air force and fleet in the Pacific. The instruments of the United States aviators' triumphs were the elegantly designed F4F Wildcat, F6F Hellcat, as well as the lethal TBF Avenger torpedo bomber. With superbly trained U.S. Navy and Marine Corps aviators at their controls, these planes became the most successful aerial weapons in naval history. A majestic portrait of a proud era from dual perspectives--the inventive minds of young aeronautical engineers and the deadly artistry of even younger combat pilots -- Pacific Air brings this important yet underappreciated chapter of World War II vividly to life.

The true-life adventure of a Western woman who found happiness in Bali, then stayed on in Indonesia to help in the struggle for freedom. The great-granddaughter of a witch from the Isle of Man, the adopted daughter of a Balinese rajah, hostess of one of the most glamorous hotels in the Far East, a prisoner of the Japanese for two horror-packed years and, as Surabaya Sue, an ardent supporter of the Indonesian revolution, K’tut Tantri is well acquainted with the unexpected. Adventure and courage run strong in her blood. It was in a Hollywood movie theater that she first discovered Bali and knew it for the place where she belonged. She had hoped to live and paint there quietly among the island’s simple people, but destiny, in the form of a stalled car and a delightful young prince, took a hand and revised her plans. She was formally adopted by the prince’s father, and...though she came to know the peasants of the Balinese kampongs, she knew also, and intimately, the life of a Balinese palace with all its ritual and tradition. This world lasted for only a few years. With war come the Japanese, presumably as deliverers overthrowing Dutch rule but in reality as tyrants. K’tut Tantri stayed on to join the underground movement agitating for Indonesian independence, and was eventually captured, imprisoned, tortured. Then with the end of hostilities she chose once again to ally herself with the Indonesians—this time in their resistance against the British and the returning Dutch. A friend of the leaders around Sukarno, she was instrumental in getting the Indonesian story to the outside world, and on several occasions she lent herself to enterprises requiring the combined talents of Mata Hari and T E. Lawrence. K’tut Tantri has an observant eye, an understanding knowledge, and she writes with spirit. Her story is a deeply moving personal drama and a vivid commentary on a period of crucial change in an ancient, romantic country.

Written as a travelogue, Surface Collection: Archaeological Travels in Southeast Asia tackles the most pressing issues of cultural-heritage management in an engaging and accessible way. In each chapter the author makes the past relevant to the present through his encounters with archaeological sites. While the book's anecdotes are associated primarily with Thailand and Indonesia--from a decaying National Museum in Manila, to the search for traces of the thousands of Communists who were killed after an attempted coup in Bali, to the discovery of a bottle of perfume found among the personal effects of Indonesian ex-president Sukarno--they have broad international interest because of the issues they raise. These archaeological stories, again and again, remind us what history both remembers and conceals.

Combining critical reflections from scholars around the globe as well as experiential records from some of the world’s most tenacious explorers, this book interrogates the concept of the ‘frontier’ as a realm of transformation, exploration and adventure. We discover the affective power of social, physical, spiritual and political frontiers in shaping humanity’s abilities to change and become. We collectively unpack the enduring conceptualization of the frontier as a site of nation-state identity formation, violent colonization, masculine prowess and the triumph of progress. In its place, this book charts a more complex and subtle emotional geography amidst an array of frontiers: the expanding human psyche that is induced under free-diving narcosis and tales of survival on one of the most technically difficult mountains in the world, ‘The Ogre’. Chapters consider solitude in the Sahara, near-death experiences in Tibetan Buddhism, the aftermath of a volcanic eruption in Bali, the Spanish Imaginary, snatched moments of sexual curiosity, and many more. This book will be of upmost importance to researchers working on theories of affect, the Anthropocene, frontier theory and human geography. It will be vital supplementary reading for undergraduates and postgraduates on courses such as Heritage Studies, Human and Cultural Geography, Anthropology, Tourism Studies and History.

Modern Cities written by William Solesbury and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-04-30 with Social Science categories.

This book presents ten types of city that are the product of the modernisation of the world in the past two centuries. That modernisation has changed the economic, social and political context in which cities have developed, as well as the form and function of cities themselves. Of the ten city types detailed, some of them—like national capitals, resorts for pilgrims or gamblers or tourists, city states or cosmopolitan cities—are not entirely new kinds of city, since they existed in pre-modern times, but their modern forms exhibit novel characteristics. Others—like megacities of 10 million plus populations, boom towns, satellite cities, cities created by émigrés or refugees, cities under communist rule, and exploding cities of super rapid growth—are unique to modern times. Each type is described and analysed, and also exemplified in brief city profiles with photographs. All in all, over 50 cities in the modern world are featured here, including Astana, Mecca, Singapore, Buenos Aires, Shenzen, Bangalore, Milton Keynes, Salt Lake City, Magnitogorsk and Ulaanbaatar. These accounts draw on research, news reports, guidebooks, film and fiction and personal travels.
