Seit den PISA-Studien wird die Problematik der Bildungsungleichheit so intensiv wie nie beforscht und diskutiert: dennoch bleiben große Erklärungslücken. Was sind die Mechanismen der Herstellung der Bildungsungleichheit? Diese Frage wird aktuell besonders über rational-choice-Modelle zum elterlichen Entscheidungsverhalten zu beantworten versucht. Eher selten finden sich Bezüge auf Pierre Bourdieu, der dazu überzeugende Thesen bereits Anfang der 1970er Jahre vorgelegt hat. Der Band versucht an dieses Erbe für die empirische Bildungsforschung wieder anzuschließen. Dazu werden Rezeptionslinien und theoretische Konzepte Bourdieus aufgearbeitet und deren Aufnahme in der aktuellen Bildungsforschung diskutiert. Über einzelne Studien und eigene empirische Analysen wird das Potenzial der Bourdieuschen Thesen untermauert und ein erweitertes Forschungsprogramm skizziert.

Interreligious learning is viewed as a key educational task today. Increasing religious plurality in our societies and associated risks of societal tensions and conflicts necessitate that students deal at school with other religions, their belief systems, and the social reality of those who believe in them. Although several international studies have shown that some categories of students are at risk to be disadvantaged at school because of social inequality, this problem is currently not considered in theories of interreligious learning. Therefore, the present study investigates whether or not categories of students are disadvantaged in interreligious learning. In addition to theological and pedagogical insights about the problem of social inequality, this book presents an empirically validated action-theoretical model which helps to understand why some students have better or worse opportunities in interreligious learning. The action-theoretical model further proposes strategies to address unequal learning conditions in interreligious learning.

This volume offers an empirical perspective on the so-called first generation of human rights. In the field of higher education research, one of the most fascinating observations is the consistent and permanent expansion of higher education systems worldwide since the end of the Second World War. Undoubtedly, the predominant approach to address these developments has been through quantitative analysis, as well as international comparisons. The following work examines the particularities of the Venezuelan context with the aim of identifying specific features of this worldwide phenomenon in this South American case. Through a combination of qualitative methods, the author proposes a biographical approach for the study of higher education inclusion processes, which takes into account the perspectives and experiences of those who have been targeted by an ambitious higher education expansion process. The most distinctive feature of this work would be its methodological contribution to the field of higher education research. One could also argue that the ethnographic account of the Bolivarian Missions of education in Chavez’s Venezuela is both original and unprecedented. Furthermore, the writing approach bridges the interests of both academics, practitioners of the field and members of the general public.

Mit der im Kontext der 'PISA-Diskussion' erfolgenden Wiederentdeckung der 'Illusion der Chancengleichheit' geht eine wenig diskutierte oder kritisch hinterfragte Tradierung einer spezifischen Vorstellung von Bildungsgerechtigkeit als Chancengleichheit einher. Der Ruf nach Chancengleichheit ist janusköpfig: Seine schlagkräftigen Evidenzen drohen elementare Momente der Thematik aus dem Blick geraten zu lassen. Wenngleich lokal wenig zentriert und medial kaum quotenfähig, existieren verschiedene Ansätze, die jenseits der in den internationalen Vergleichsstudien vorgenommenen forschungsmethodischen Fokussierungen – und damit (forschungs-)notwendig auch verbundenen Verengungen – das damit in Rede stehende Phänomen der „Bildungsgerechtigkeit“ in breiterer und komplexerer Weise thematisieren. In diesem Band soll zumindest ein Teil dieser Vielfalt eingefangen werden. Es geht dabei neben einer theoretischen Fundierung möglicher Konzeptionen sozialer Un-Gleichheit und Bildungs-un-gerechtigkeit um eine Auseinandersetzung mit alternativen empirischen – insbesondere hermeneutischen – Zugriffen auf Prozesse der Reproduktion von Ungleichheit im Bildungssystem und deren normative Rechtfertigungen.

Pierre Bourdieu (1930-2002) is the most influential sociologist of our time. His works take in education, culture, sport, literature, painting, class, philosophy, religion, law, media, intellectuals, methodology, photography, universities, colonialism, kinship, schooling and politics. Not much remains outside Bourdieu’s sociological eye. His works are widely read across disciplines and he was one of the most prominent public intellectuals in France. Conversations with Bourdieu presents the first comprehensive attempt at a critical engagement with Bourdieu’s theory as a totality. Michael Burawoy constructs a series of imaginary conversations between Bourdieu and his nemesis – Marxism – from which he silently borrowed so much. Starting with Marx, and proceeding through Gramsci, Fanon, Freire, de Beauvoir, and Mills, Burawoy takes up the challenge Bourdieu presents to Marxism, simultaneously developing a critique of Bourdieu and a reconstruction of Marxism. Karl Von Holdt, in turn, brings these conversations to South Africa, showing the relevance of Bourdieu’s ideas to a country he never visited. Armed with Bourdieu, Von Holdt takes up some of the most pressing social and political issues of contemporary South Africa: the relation between symbolic and real violence, the place of intellectuals in public life, the intervention of gender in politics, the grappling with race, the critique of education, the importance of habitus, the history and future of class mobilisation, and the legacy of the liberation struggle. Wie ist das nun eigentlich mit der Volkskirche? Ist sie schon weg und nur noch Erinnerungsgegenstand von manchen Älteren? Oder ist sie noch da und wandelt aber ihre Gestalt? Ist Volkskirche das, was gehen muss, um Besserem Platz zu machen? Oder hat Volkskirchlichkeit auch etwas, was man besser behalten sollte? Beides kann man sich mit Fug und Recht fragen, denn für beide Ansichten gibt es triftige empirische Belege und ekklesiologische Gründe. Auf der einen Seite kann man im Mitgliederschwund der katholischen Kirche im deutschsprachigen Raum natürlich einen Anlass sehen, den Anspruch von Volkskirche für überholt zu halten. Auf der anderen Seite kann es einem passieren, dass man in einer hochgradig unkonfessionell geprägten Stadt wie Hannover am Bahnhof Kaffee trinkt und in der Speisenkarte für Freitag nur Fischgerichte findet - denn Freitag ist doch Fischtag. Weiß doch jeder. Auf der einen Seite propagieren die einen die Entscheidungskirche, in der endlich die alte volkskirchliche Tendenz zur Mitläuferschaft überwunden sein wird. Auf der anderen Seite mahnen Stimmen, dass es auch etwas mit Freiheit zu tun hat, wenn religiöse Settings so angelegt sind, dass man mit viel Ruhe in den hinteren Bänken Platz nehmen darf, ohne dass einer nachfragt. Das Themenheft ruft diese innere Debatte auf. Es fragt: Was gewinnt, was verliert man, wenn man nicht mehr Volkskirche sein will? Wie verändert sich, je nach Position, die Gestalt der Normalstruktur, des Regelbetriebs von Kirche: die Gemeinde? Ist Verkleinerung, aber Profilierung besser als die bisher gegebene breite, aber eben diffuse kulturelle Präsenz von Kirche? Oder anders, mit Rahner: Muss oder darf der Christ der Zukunft ein Mystiker sein? Und wenn er muss: warum?
