In a world facing escalating concerns about climate change and environmental sustainability, the search for more efficient and eco-friendly technologies has become paramount. As we seek alternatives to conventional practices that contribute to greenhouse gas emissions and resource depletion, it is crucial to explore innovations that promote a greener and more sustainable future. This book delves into one such transformative technology: absorption chillers. Cooling has become an indispensable aspect of modern life, with applications spanning from commercial buildings and industrial processes to power generation and district cooling systems. However, conventional cooling methods often rely on energy-intensive compression refrigeration, which not only contributes to significant energy consumption but also utilizes synthetic refrigerants with adverse environmental impacts. Absorption chillers, on the other hand, present a viable solution to these challenges. By harnessing the principles of thermally-driven refrigeration and employing natural refrigerants, these innovative machines provide an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional cooling methods. The utilization of waste heat or low-grade energy sources further enhances their appeal, enabling them to serve as a bridge between cooling needs and energy efficiency. This book aims to offer a comprehensive understanding of absorption chillers, catering to readers from various backgrounds, including engineering professionals, researchers, students, and anyone curious about sustainable cooling technologies. We will embark on a journey through the fundamental principles, thermodynamic cycles, and components of absorption chillers, unraveling their inner workings and shedding light on their advantages and applications. Throughout the pages of this book, we will explore the history and development of absorption chillers, tracing their evolution from early concepts to the cutting-edge technology that stands today. We will delve into the diverse applications of absorption chillers in commercial buildings, industrial processes, power generation, and district cooling systems, illustrating their versatility and adaptability in addressing the cooling needs of different sectors. Moreover, the book will highlight the ongoing research and advancements in the field of absorption chillers, showcasing the efforts to improve efficiency, capacity, and integration with renewable energy sources. By exploring the latest innovations, we aim to present readers with a glimpse into the future of cooling technology, where sustainability and environmental consciousness are at the forefront. It is essential to recognize that the journey to a more sustainable world involves collective efforts and continuous exploration of greener alternatives. This book, while focusing on absorption chillers, also serves as a testament to the broader pursuit of sustainable solutions across various industries. Finally, I would like to extend my gratitude to all the researchers, engineers, and pioneers in the field of absorption chillers, whose dedicated efforts and innovative thinking have shaped the landscape of cooling technology. Their invaluable contributions have paved the way for a more sustainable and eco-conscious future. I hope this book serves as a valuable resource and inspires readers to embrace and champion technologies like absorption chillers, as we collectively endeavor to build a greener, cooler, and more sustainable world.

The world is becoming increasingly electrified. For the foreseeable future, coal will continue to be the dominant fuel used for electric power production. The low cost and abundance of coal is one of the primary reasons for this. Electric power transmission, a process in the delivery of electricity to consumers, is the bulk transfer of electrical power. Typically, power transmission is between the power plant and a substation near a populated area. Electricity distribution is the delivery from the substation to the consumers. Due to the large amount of power involved, transmission normally takes place at high voltage (110 kV or above). Electricity is usually transmitted over long distance through overhead power transmission lines. Underground power transmission is used only in densely populated areas due to its high cost of installation and maintenance, and because the high reactive power gain produces large charging currents and difficulties in voltage management. A power transmission system is sometimes referred to colloquially as a "grid"; however, for reasons of economy, the network is rarely a true grid. Redundant paths and lines are provided so that power can be routed from any power plant to any load centre, through a variety of routes, based on the economics of the transmission path and the cost of power. Much analysis is done by transmission companies to determine the maximum reliable capacity of each line, which, due to system stability considerations, may be less than the physical or thermal limit of the line. Deregulation of electricity companies in many countries has led to renewed interest in reliable economic design of transmission networks. This new book presents leading-edge research on electric power and its generation, transmission and efficiency.

This book provides a detailed analysis of absorption refrigeration systems, covering single effect to multi-effect systems and their applications. Both the first and second laws of thermodynamics are discussed in relation to refrigeration systems to show how system performance differs from one law to another. Comparative energy and exergy analyses and assessments of single effect, double effect, triple effect and quadruple effect absorption refrigeration system are performed to illustrate the impact of an increase in the number of effects on system performance. In particular, the second law (exergy) formulation for absorption refrigeration systems, rarely discussed by other works, is covered in detail. Integrated Absorption Refrigeration Systems will help researchers, students and instructors in the formulation of energy and exergy efficiency equations for absorption refrigeration systems.

Solar cooling systems can be a cost-effective and environmentally attractive air-conditioning solution. The design of such systems, however, is complex. Research carried out under the aegis of the International Energy Agency's Solar Heating and Cooling Program has shown that there is a range of seemingly subtle design decisions that can impact significantly on the performance of solar cooling systems. In order to reduce the risk of errors in the design process, this guide provides detailed and very specific engineering design information. It focuses on case study examples of installed plants that have been monitored and evaluated over the last decade. For three successful plants the design process is described in detail and the rationale for each key design decision is explained. Numerical constraints are suggested for the sizing / selection parameters of key equipment items. Moreover, the application conditions under which the system selection is appropriate are discussed. By following The Guide for any of the three specific solar cooling systems, the designer can expect to reliably achieve a robust, energy-saving solution. This book is intended as a companion to the IEA Solar Cooling Handbook which provides a general overview of the various technologies as well as comprehensive advice to enable engineers to design their own solar cooling system from first principles.
