Abstract landscape painting expresses emotion while still capturing the essence of a landscape. This compelling book explores this suggestive style first developed by Turner. Using the hauntingly-beautiful paintings of Gareth Edwards, it explores the technical, historical and psychological dimensions of abstract landscape painting to help you develop your own skilful and intensely personal approach. Through this new book you can learn about how to begin an abstract landscape painting, using chance application; understand how to 'manage accidents' to create innovative pieces of work; discover the importance of effective composition and how this navigates the viewer's journey; determine the importance of the 'invisible' elements of painting: the unspoken value of the viewer and the influence of 'looking'. It also reveals how to utilize a convergence of linear and atmospheric perspective to help your viewer traverse the picture plane and helps you understand the importance of light, space, colour, and tone in generating evocative paintings. Finally, it encourages you to be more demanding of your surface, using textural techniques and glazing to achieve professional production values. It is a unique and exciting book into this under-documented genre.

Two great American painters, Mark Rothko and Milton Avery, were both interested in the idea that the essence of a painting was not its illusory representation of "reality and depth" but instead the painting's colors and their relation to each other. Rothko thought that a painting should have no "Representation of Reality" at all. Just be blocks of different colors. And, while Avery agreed that Color Fields, colors and their relationship with each other, were a crucial element in a painting, he also thought paintings should have, however vague and abstract, some reference to "Representational Reality". In this series of abstract landscapes, I tried to find a Middle Path between "Representational Reality" and pure "Color Fields". Even though I later developed a more representational style similar to the German Expressionists, I still see my often heavily distorted representational images as opportunities for extreme use of non-representational color.

This carefully culled portfolio of 14 paintings, meticulously reproduced and documented, spans 60 years--from the time of the master's arrival in America to the late 80s. Readers will find rare examples of de Kooning's earliest works juxtaposed with a cityscape from the 1950s, canvases from the important period of his arrival in Easthampton, and abstract landscapes of the 70s and 80s. David Anfam's essay traces de Kooning's intriguing relationship to water, invoking the work of Heraclitus, Yeats, Melville and Frost in conjuring the sense of fluidity that characterized both his urban and rural work. Anfam also puzzles over the enigma of a man who lived perpetually beside the ocean--the book opens with a photograph of him striding across the beach in Easthampton in 1968--but never learned to swim.

Inspired by the famous book by Robert Rosenblum, Modern Painting and the Northern Romantic Tradition. From Friedrich to Rothko (1975), the exhibition aims to demonstrate the pictorial, aesthetic and historical-cultural connection between the northern European tradition - particularly early Romantic landscape painting - and modern European and American abstraction. It reveals a fascinating "birth of abstraction out of the spirit of Romantic landscape". Following in the tradition of numerous earlier exhibitions on Romanticism and landscape painting, the present one departs from this argument to connect almost two centuries of art history.
