Wireless sensor and body area networks (WSN and WBAN respectively) have been seen as a future way to monitor humans’ psycho-physiological signs remotely. There are a number of standards that could be used for building WBAN sytems. However, wireless UWB networks based on IEEE 802.15.4a offer the advantages of a large frequency range and low power spectral density, making it suitable for both WSNs and WBANs used for medical applications. The technology has matured sufficiently that it can be used to develop products for the marketplace. This book presents how the IEEE802.15.4-2011 (former IEEE802.15.4a) can be used in wireless body area networks (WBAN) for healthcare and welfare related applications. It gives a short overview on the IEEE802.15.4 family and then gives details of IEEE802.15.4-2011 based solutions. The mobile information society has revolutionised the way we work, communicate and socialise. Mobile phones, wireless free communication and associated technologies such as WANs, LANs, and PANs, cellular networks, SMS, 3G, Bluetooth, Blackberry and WiFi are seen as the driving force of the advanced society. The roots of today's explosion in wireless technology can be traced back to the deregulation of AT&T in the US and the Post Office and British Telecom in the UK, as well as Nokia's groundbreaking approach to the design and marketing of the mobile phone. Providing a succinct introduction to the field of mobile and wireless communications, this book: Begins with the basics of radio technology and offers an overview of key scientific terms and concepts for the student reader Addresses the social and economic implications of mobile and wireless technologies, such as the effects of the deregulation of telephone systems Uses a range of case studies and examples of mobile and wireless communication, legislation and practices from the UK, US, Canada, mainland Europe, the Far East and Australia Contains illustrations and tables to help explain technical concepts and show the growth and change in mobile technologies Features a glossary of technical terms, annotated further reading at the end of each chapter and web links for further study and research Mobile and Wireless Communications is a key resource for students on a range of social scientific courses, including media and communications, sociology, public policy, and management studies, as well as a useful introduction to the field for researchers and general readers.

This mathematically rigorous overview of physical layer wireless communications is now in a 4th, fully revised and updated edition. The new edition features new content on 4G cellular systems, 5G cellular outlook, bandpass signals and systems, and polarization, among many other topics, in addition to a new chapters on channel assignment techniques. Along with coverage of fundamentals and basic principles sufficient for novice students, the volume includes finer details that satisfy the requirements of graduate students aiming to conduct in-depth research. The book begins with a survey of the field, introducing issues relevant to wireless communications. The book moves on to cover relevant discrete subjects, from radio propagation, to error probability performance, and cellular radio resource management. An appendix provides a tutorial on probability and random processes. The content stresses core principles that are applicable to a broad range of wireless standards. New examples are provided throughout the book to better explain the more complex material to the reader. Additional problems have also been added to those already appearing at the ends of the chapters to make the book more suitable for course instruction.

Lectori Salutem! This is another book – among the myriads – dealing with wireless communications. The reader might be aware: this topic is really among bestsellers in technology – bestsellers in technology itself and that in technical literature. Communications is one of the leading techniques in information society and mobile/wireless communications is one among the (maybe not more than two with optics the second) leading techniques in communications. Development of wireless communications was and is really spec- cular in the last decade of the 20th and first decade of the 21st century. Such topics as MIMO, wireless networking, security in the technological field, new business models in the service providing field, various applications in the users’ side, to mention a few only, were undergoing an unprecedented evolution. So it is not surprising that the number of conferences and the number of books in this field grows and grows, in a nearly unbounded way.

Mobile and wireless communications applications have a clear impact on improving the humanity wellbeing. From cell phones to wireless internet to home and office devices, most of the applications are converted from wired into wireless communication. Smart and advanced wireless communication environments represent the future technology and evolutionary development step in homes, hospitals, industrial, vehicular and transportation systems. A very appealing research area in these environments has been the wireless ad hoc, sensor and mesh networks. These networks rely on ultra low powered processing nodes that sense surrounding environment temperature, pressure, humidity, motion or chemical hazards, etc. Moreover, the radio frequency (RF) transceiver nodes of such networks require the design of transmitter and receiver equipped with high performance building blocks including antennas, power and low noise amplifiers, mixers and voltage controlled oscillators. Nowadays, the researchers are facing several challenges to design such building blocks while complying with ultra low power consumption, small area and high performance constraints. CMOS technology represents an excellent candidate to facilitate the integration of the whole transceiver on a single chip. However, several challenges have to be tackled while designing and using nanoscale CMOS technologies and require innovative idea from researchers and circuits designers. While major researchers and applications have been focusing on RF wireless communication, optical wireless communication based system has started to draw some attention from researchers for a terrestrial system as well as for aerial and satellite terminals. This renewed interested in optical wireless communications is driven by several advantages such as no licensing requirements policy, no RF radiation hazards, and no need to dig up roads besides its large bandwidth and low power consumption. This second part of the book, Mobile and Wireless Communications: Key Technologies and Future Applications, covers the recent development in ad hoc and sensor networks, the implementation of state of the art of wireless transceivers building blocks and recent development on optical wireless communication systems. We hope that this book will be useful for students, researchers and practitioners in their research studies.
